ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

I just picked up and ESP LTD MH-417, for a great price in excellent condition.

I am not a big fan of active pickups.

I am looking for a little guidance on two things.

1. Is it possible to mod out the EMG and put in Dimarzio pickups? If it is, what is entailed and is there some links that can get me started. (I have been able to find people have done it, but not how to do it.)

2. What Dimarzio pickups would people suggest. From what I have researched through Dimarzio, and the tonal quality of Mahogany, it appears the D activator neck and bridge should compliment the guitar nicely. I play more in the vain of Vai, basic rock, it doesn't get heavy like the death metal bands (Not trying to offend anyone)

Any and all suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all of your help in advance,

Have a great weekend,

Jody

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

I think the only option is emg hz pickups, they are passive and will fit in there, i was looking at buying a esp ltd sc207 and seen the same kind of dilemma. The hzs are only 69.99 so they are not to expensive

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

i could be wrong but the emgs you have in the guitar have a bigger route than the dimarzio would need. so yeah they should fit you will just have extra room around the pickup.

i am not much of a fan of active pickups either, however you may check out the seymour duncan blackout line. as the dimarzio d activator line is suppose to emulate active pickups. I dont care much for them either but they do a good job at what they are designed to do.

i would say a d-sonic and paf or air norton maybe a liquifier and crunch lab

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

Hey Nathan,

Thanks for the other pickup option. On seven string.org, someone posted a mod, where they installed dimarzios in the guitar. There were very little directions on how to do it. So it can be done, it is more of a matter of difficulty and patience level

Thanks again, and have a great night,

J

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

Thanks j for the options

I have heard good things about the air norton too. I really like that idea in he neck. I have used that in my last 7 and i liked it a lot. It is that elusive bridge pickup, that is a hard decision. I will check out the others you suggested.

Thanks again for the help,

Have a great night,

J

The DiMarzios are wider than the EMGs. And the EMG HZ just sound plain horrible. Seymour Duncans are almost as wide as EMGs, so you could consider those. But you will still have the gap around.

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

Is it possible to do an 18v mod on the 7-string EMG's like you can do on the 6-stringers?

Re: ESP LTD MH-417 Mod

Thank you for the posts everyone,

With a slight trim of the metal sides and new pickup holes, I installed a set of dimarzios. They went in flawlessly. Look great and sound great

Have a great day,

J
