Excuse me... (RG550)

Excuse the total newbness, but I have a simple question, and a little info before that. I love the Ibanez guitars I've played over the years and it's the brand that I prefer, but I have to admit that I really don't know much of the history of Ibanez and its models. The RG550 debuted in 1987 and was out of print for a long time, and now I see that it is being reissued for the 20th anniversary. I've checked around the forum and I see some people praising the 550, but my question is why. Was the RG550 a revolutionary guitar, and is it really that great of a guitar? If it was, I would think that it wouldn't have been discontinued -- but as I said, I barely know anything about Ibanez guitars.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 550, exactly why it's being reissued, why it's considered such a great guitar, etc. Convince me to get one sometime!

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

The 550 is current form is the 1570 (older 570) and the 2550 (550 rosewood). The original 550 was revolutionary due to what it offered in a total package. You had the thinnest neck, top notch hardware, light weight sleek body, and an affordable price. In 1987 there was really no other guitar that could match it.

Is the reissue worth much? (and I mean this in terms of being a good guitar, not price.)

Yes, very much so. The reissue is almost identical, but with some updates. There are many threads on the RG20th (550 reissue), but if you like the original, then grab a reissue while you can. (only 1987 being made)

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

I'll second that. The 550 was an affordable JEM, basically. That was it's whole reason for existence. As Chris said, top notch hardware, great build quality, amazing neck, great finishes, etc. They were also in the kind of price bracket where you didn't mind modding and upgrading them, too.

The reissue is worth every penny because now it has a better neck (5-piece construction w/ dual titanium reinforcement rods) and Prestige finishing. Buy one. If you don't like it, sell it and make your money back, you won't lose anything.

I disagree, most places in the UK are asking close to a grand for them. Thats stupid money for what you get, IMO. (Limited Edition reissue or not).

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

Exactly why I ordered one from the USA. The original poster lives in the USA, and the price is very good over there. UK list price is £849.

Definitely, bloody yanks get it for 500 or something crazy. I was going to do the same but it ended up I was too lazy to deal with the whole importing deal, and my mate in New York was swamped with work at the time too.

Did you get it shipped directly from the place you ordered it to the UK?

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

Yeah, it'll be shipped from Rich at IbanezRules.com.

Earlier I should have said "The reissue is worth every penny if you live in the USA". It works out at something like £465.

Clearly, the UK price is stupid.

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

Unfortunately not £465 delivered, the shipping is $110 (about £60), then there's a little tax etc. when it gets here. Still works out way cheaper than buying one from the yoo-kay.

Re: Excuse me... (RG550)

When he posts it, get him to mark it as a warrenty replacement. That way he can insure it fully and you won't get hit with import duty.
