finish question.....

hey,
I just got my rg3120 today in the twilight blue finish. I havent played it yet because I havent finshed my prison sentence in my wrist brace for the day (nerve damage). One of the reasons why I got this guitar was because of the finish. My s7 supposedly has the same exact finish, although one model year older. When I stood the 2 up together, it was like night and day! The rg was very blue and the s7 was very greenish in comparison. Can anyone explain this? I've done research and old advertisment photos show my s7 as being the correct color for the model. When ordering the RG, I never did a compare and contrast. Did ibanez tweak the colors from 2001 to 2002?

Finishes fade. Has your "S" had any exposure to direct sunlight or to fluorescent lighting?

Also, finishes are a lot like wood grains themselves...they're not always completely consistant. Though the majority of 3120s might look to be the same shade of blue, I've seen some darker and some lighter.

I don't know if they changed it but all of the tb's that I have played/seen appear closer to a faded green/teal than an actual blue color.

I noticed the same thing only comparing my 2020XTB to my friend's 2120 - yeah different guitars, but I believe the same color finish (TB).

His is much more of a green. We sort of concluded that if the wood was more of a yellowish, it would make the blue more of a green. However, I'm not sure that mahagony is at all yellowish.

Maple sure, but mahagony?

my s7 spent its life up until 2 months ago in a box and since then hasnt seen flourescent lighting or sunlight. As far as the woods are concerned, both of the guitars have flame maple tops. I understand that no 2 finishes are exactly alike but this is like comparing blue to green. I wish i had a digital cam to take a snapshot. oh well, I guess its good to have some variety. I played the rg for the first time and aside from lousy setup, sounds fantastic.

While looking for the "best" RG3120 and RG2020X last year I had the ability of comparing about 10 or so brand new 3120's and about 17 RG2020X's; The retail sales rep from Chesbro, the distributor of Ibanez guitars, was nice enough to go into thier wherehouse and open up all of the boxed 3120's and 2020X's, take some pictures and send them to me via email. Having viewed so many of the same guitars I can honestly say that the finish variances can be HUGE from guitar to guitar. Both guitars' finishes (3120 and 2020) both varied from a very dark green to a very pale blue(turqiose/light blue for the 2020X's).
