GAS strikes again... 442RTR!

I can't believe i won this. (Sorry, babahi!)

I'll tell you more about it when it arrives, but i'm really excited. This is a total departure for me... alder body with a maple neck. (By the way, Rich, the catalog section of your site rocks!)

Trans red may not be my thing, so i'm considering a few options, one of which might be to send it for nickel plating. I'd like to find a local shop that'll take on the challenge, but so far, nobody's up to it. GunsGirlsandGuitars just may be getting a call from me.

I've still got the guitar player mag in which this one is part of a Under $750 shootout.

It got decent reviews.

Yeah, i'm definitely going to consider swapping out the hardware for chrome. I need to find out what the stud spacing is on the trem and see what else might fit... maybe a Wilkinson or a Fender Deluxe locking trem, matched up with some Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners.

For US$250, i figure i can't go wrong!

Man, when it rains, it pours!

I somehow managed to snap up a second 442R on eBay! These things are scarce as hen's teeth, and i manage to score TWO of them in less than two weeks? For $250 a piece? Freaky.

I'm really curious, though... the 442R is only listed in the 1992 catalog, and the available colours are shown as TB (transparent blue), TR (transparent red) and TS (tobacco sunburst). This one is distinctly CS (cherry sunburst), and i've never seen one in transparent blue... and i would kill or die to find one. Mind you, i had never seen a trans red one before last week, either, so one never knows.

Does anybody know roughly what the production numbers might have been on the 442R, and whether the cherry sunburst ones are a result of a catalog fluke or a running colour change?

Hi Darren,
Just so you know, I was sitting here watching that 442R yesterday with my finger on the Bid button, but I let it pass. I also bought a cherry sunburst 442R awhile back, thought there was a snag in getting it, and then found out a few hours before that auction closed yesterday that it's finally on the way. There is also an old thread on here about another 442R (Babahi has one). Like you, I wondered why those colors weren't in the catalog. Not the first time I've seen guitars show up with oddball colors though.

Well, the Trans Red 442R arrived today, and i have to say i'm very impressed with it. This one's got a few minor chips in the finish, but no major dents. Some hazing of the finish in the picking area, but i might try and buff that out. The fretboard is also a wee bit dirty, so i'll give that a good cleaning as well. Overall, the guitar is in pretty good shape for a 10-year-old axe.

Loads of tone from the alder body and solid 1-piece maple neck and fretboard. Yes... 1 piece... no scarf joint, no laminations of any kind. I'm still trying to figure out how they got the truss rod in there, because there's no skunk stripe, and the neck and fretboard look like they're one piece of wood. Maybe i just didn't look closely enough.

The stock S2/S3/H6 pickups even sound pretty nice. Loads of variation in their tones, and nice balance.

As nice as the guitar is, i'm not sure if red is my thing... i snipe-bid on it impulsively and was surprised to win it. With the cherry burst one on its way, i'll decide between the two when it arrives, but i don't think i'll be keeping both.
