Genuine 1989 RG570?

Can anyone confirm for me that this is a 1989 RG570?

The serial number checks out at guitardaterproject.org/ibanez.aspx

There are two suspicious things when I look at the guitar.

There is white looking paint marks around the pickup rings and the volume / tone pots. If the paint was wearing away, would it be white underneath the black?

Also there is no backplate and what's with the wood plating covering the control cavity?

Other than this, the guitar looks good for it's age. Some scratching on the back and a couple of tiny chips, but I see no major damage or cracks.

Thank you

Re: Genuine 1989 RG570?

Yeah, it seems to be an original 570 except the volume/tone knobs and maybe the plates, iīm not shure if they are original with a lot of wear or replacement parts.
The white color seems to be above the black paint, i donīt think it was originally white.
Try to disassemble the pickup rings and knobs and clean it, maybe the white will come off and also the neck to check what is written on the body, you should find a stamp saying RG570BK.

Yup, that's a totally legit 570. The white stuff is dried up automotive wax. As Tuga said, pull off the rings and knobs to clean it up.

Why would there be automotive wax on there?

I wonder why those back panels are wood / fiberboard.

I was talking about the body stamp, not the neck sticker

You will find a black stamp like in this pic, itīs almost unreadable but itīs the only one i've got to show to you. It says RG570GF. But again, no worries about your "new" guitar and congrats, they are great!

Re: Genuine 1989 RG570?

Nice golden era guitar!

Back when post-CBS Fenders up to 1980 were considered starter guitars and sat in pawn shops as used instruments, I thought that one day they could be worth something and considered buying (since nobody else was) and eventually got four of them but sold off long before market went up. Then I saw a lot of Gibson Melody Makers and Les Paul/SG Juniors that people wouldn't touch and thought they could be worth something, too. I didn't jump on those either but did get a '65 Melody Maker but sold that off, too.

Right now the golden era Ibanezes are still pretty decent values in the used world of guitars and now is the time to buy. If you hang onto them they can go up five to ten times in value. I bought the Melody Maker, all original, for $250 bucks in early 1990s and the refinished '65 tele for $440 in 1984 and those would bring in way more today.

The golden era Ibanezes were head and shoulders the best quality superstrats of their day, using Edge instead of Floyd or Kahler, and paying more attention to neck than any other maker yet keeping prices way below some others and people will pay thousands for them someday.

A previous owner was probably lazy about cleaning up the wax when they put it on.

I think what your seeing on the rear cover is the protective paper that the guitar originally shipped with on the plates. The original owner never removed it........ it's now part of the cover itself.

What was the wax for? I've never seen that on a guitar.

You might be right about the paper-looking covering though.

What makes you say that?

Re: Genuine 1989 RG570?

The wax is probably to just polish the guitar ready for sale, but it's not been taken apart to do this meaning it's got leftovers around the controls and pickup rings...

What makes you say that?

I wax my guitars every so often with automotive compound and a microfiber. Basically it takes out the fine surface scratches in the finish and enhances the glossy finish.

But like others mentioned, previous owner probably didnt take the hardware off first, so some buildup got under them.

Re: Genuine 1989 RG570?

Well thanks for the replies. I feel at ease with you guys confirming this a RG570.

I'm not too happy with the setup though, so I'll make a separate topic for that.
