GMW Guitars - Opinions?

I've considered ordering a GMW Custom for the longest time, and have now been offered a GMW superstrat in a trade. Have any of you owned, or had experience with them?

Everything I read seems to indicate that Lee builds amazing guitars, I've just never had any opinions direct from anyone who owned one.

Cheers!

He doesn't have a 100+ page thread on Jemsite about lousy work and shifty business practices. That's a good start.

Re: GMW Guitars - Opinions?

I've owned several and have played dozens.
I've yet to play a dog.
Lee always picks the best pieces of wood for each piece of the guitar.
the fret work is always top notch and the neck shapes are basically old 80's San Dimas Charvel.
Put it this way, currently I own 2 USA jackson SL2H's , one jackson SL1 a Bernie Rico CS shop 7, an Ibby RG7CT.
If I had to sell them all and could only keep one it would be the GMW.
It's the most effortless playing guitar I own and sounds great recorded.

Wow solid maple ???? that must sound bright as hell? right?
Au Contriare does this sound bright as hell to you?

thru a mark III

If I needed another 6 stringer it would be a GMW ........no hesitation.
go for it you will love it, and if you don't, you can easily flip it over on any of the jackson/charvel forums as they are all huge fans of Lee.
If Lee actually used dealers and you could try one in a store I have no doubt he would be one of the "big" players along with Suhr and Anderson.

Thanks for the reply. That's a beautiful guitar! As for the solid maple, I've got a Keith Roscoe custom super strat that's solid maple as well, and I think they sound awesome. Plenty of low end thump without getting as dark sounding as mahogany. Kind of like the best properties of Mahogany and Alder all rolled into one. Nice recordings there as well. Love the take on Far Beyond the Sun!

Re: GMW Guitars - Opinions?

Everything sounds bright through my Mark III, except stuff with EMGs lol.

Try the C30 mod if that bothers you to smooth out the top end.

Re: GMW Guitars - Opinions?

Lee does great work but he does have a few turds. Im sure every maker has a bad day.

He did some custom work for me on an RG and I wasnt impressed.
There was also a huge crapstorm over a laminated fretboard he did for someone at the JCF. I personally would never buy from him but I dont believe he is a bad builder.
