Question A good guitar to upgrade to?

OK. I am an intermediate guitar player. I am 15 and have been playing for about a year or two. I'm pretty good compared to other kids i know. i have a cheap Squier Strat that did its goob but i think its time to upgrade. I got the Squier in 07. I can't decide on an Ibanez rg350dx or the rg5ex1. I like the finish on both. I know they are very similar guitars but, are there any main differences except the appearance, headstock, etc. and if you have any suggestions around the $400 range feel free to explain.
BTW i play metal and rock mostly. Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, stuff like that.

You can't go wrong with an extended scale-length 7-string EVER. I've also heard some great things about agile guitars.

Why are you stuck between an Ibanez rg350dx or the rg5ex1? For your stated budget of $400, you could easily pick up an older RG-570. Do it, just do it--you know you should!

Yeah, definatly check out some of the older (especially late 80's) rg series. You may not know a lot about them if your a young, new player, but definetly do research on them. 550's, 570's, etc. Watch the classifieds here and be patient and you will easily snag one in that price range. It is a MUCH better instrument than a 350dx.

Re: A good guitar to upgrade to?

Assuming it's playable (which it should be) then that's an ideal guitar for you

Most of the older RGs are still in great physical condition but check there's nothing wrong with the neck and off you go

Looks perfect. That is exactly the kind of thing you need.

I think you will find that for $299 you will get a guitar that will last you for years.

Re: A good guitar to upgrade to?

I bought an '87 RG560 in the early 90's, still plays great today.

Re: A good guitar to upgrade to?

I'd honestly look for an early 00's or late 90's RG. That '87 560 is mad sweet, but if you haven't been playing that long an old RG with potential neck issues and God knows how much fret wear might put you off. You're also going from a Squire Strat with, I'm assuming, a standard non-locking rocker trem. A floating trem takes work, particularly the Edge 3. Edge 3 isn't a bad trem when set up right but they DO take work! So would an original Edge if you haven't worked with floating trems. If you're the patient sort and use some of the good resources out there on the net you should be okay.
My $.02: Get a late model 90's-00's RG and block the trem. Maybe remove the block and work on it as a floater as you get more experience.
Good luck!
