Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

Thanks all! This one was easier than the first, as the graphic wasn't as complex. The worst part (and it wasn't really that bad) was routing that small cavity on the back for the toggle switch for the pickup switching. I still think it's a goofy location for the switch, but then I'm not Richie Kotzen.

Cool guitar! I used to love those Kotzen guitars, especially the one on the cover of Fever Dream. He plays Fender Tele's now doesn't he?
Amazing player!

He's got a signature tele and a signature strat. He's definitely changed his image and his gear since the shred days. He can still tear it up, though.

Has anyone picked up the Kotzen Tele? I was very very suprised to feel how big the neck was....it was the thickest/clubbiest guitar neck I have ever played!!!

That's an old pic - I've got different knobs on it now that are closer to the clear/pink bell knobs on Kotzen's. I'm also doing a second body just like this one where I've made some refinements to the graphic. I'll post that one when it's done.
Hey man I'm still waiting to see if you'll make me one of those replicas!!!

Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

You know, I've been considering making these, or something similar, for sale (I know - we went through that last year), but it takes me so long to get 'em done, I think I'd just end up with angry customers. I don't want to be a part of THAT trend on Jemsite! There's plenty of good and wanna-be luthiers around here without me tossing my hat in the ring. I might, if I get extra time and extra parts, build a body here and there and just sell those as I have them available, and see how it goes. I could never do it on an advance order basis, though. And I have to finish all of MY projects first! Let's see - that's puts it somewhere around 2015 before I could work on outside projects...

Wow man, you have some serious talent. I'd kill to be able to draw/paint like that.
Keep it up

Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

You have a talent for sure.

Did you do all the graphics yourself and the clearcoat?

Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

The graphics are photoshopped from scratch, using a pic of the original for a basic pattern/template. I print the graphic, apply to the body, shoot clear, then airbrush some touchup and final details, then shoot the final clearcoat.

Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

It was a Starfield (division of Ibanez) endorsee guitar built by Mike Lipe. There are some good pics here:

You'll have to register to see the pics.

Re: Halloween Treat: Kotzen Horror Guitar #2

Seems like I remember him having a tele with an Ibanez neck, but I won't swear to it. You might also check out his website forum at richiekotzen.com. Those guys know a lot more about him and his gear than I do.
