Which hard-tail Ibanez guitar has similar RG470 features?

Which hard-tail Ibanez guitar has similar RG470 features? My RG470 is letting me down again, in that the high E and B strings are not staying in tune. This is despite a really good setup by a very good tech, the one who gets $125 for a Floyd setup. I guess I should check the locking nut, given that these 2 strings share one of the 3 __________ s? So I guess I'll bring it to him again for a look. He gives a lot of his time in assessment and planning and answering questions.

He's aware of the shortcomings of my licensed Floyd, versus that of the RG570's Edge. He thought mine has life in it.

I don't know, maybe I'm just not attentive enough to enjoy a Floyd now. I'm lazy when it comes to troubleshooting, changing strings, and maintenance. Although I can afford to pay someone.

I find that I'm less and less willing to put time into setup of guitars, fx units, and gizmos. I enjoy simplicity. And maybe after playing Floyds since they came out, I'm ready to simplify by going with a fixed bridge. I would miss the whammy bar, because I use it a lot. But I miss my wah, which I've been leaving home. The absence of these elements does inspire alternative and creative approaches, which is cool.

And I suppose, I appear to be thinking in either/or terms, when I could add a fixed-tail guitar to my arsenal. And I could choose one or the other when I head to soundcheck. Or bring both.

Thank you for reading my thoughts -- I'd love to hear your feedback,
JErry

Re: Which hard-tail Ibanez guitar has similar RG470 features?

I own a 470 (which I'm selling, but that's another thread). I recently got into a cover band. I needed a guitar that was more flexible in the tuning department since covering other people's stuff can lead to a lot of different tunings.

I recently purchased an Ibanez RGT42FX. It is a neck-through model, mahogany body, without the middle pickup and a hard tail for easy tuning changes. I had mine modified on the same day it arrived at the store (swapped the stock pickups for Duncans).

It has immediately become my favorite guitar. I have never played a neck-through guitar before and frankly, I don't ever want to play a bolt-on again. The tone is incredible, the feel is incredible. I would strongly recommend the RGT42 to anyone who wants a hard tail Ibanez. It's a great sounding guitar.

They made an RG 470 with a fixed bridge in 94 and 95. I have two (my main gigging guitar and a backup). Can't get closer than that!

Picked mine up on evilbay a couple years ago, so they do exist.

It's sad that the rg 1521 is only available in Japan, it could have been close enough money wize.

That would be a RG421 which used to be made in Japan, but is now built in Indonesia.

You can search the bay for either a MIJ 421 or the newer RGR 421 which is still a very nice guitar.

No, the RG421 has the HH pickup layout. There is an RG470FX. It's the exact same thing as the RG470 only hardtail. They aren't made in Japan though, they're Korean. --Jason

Cool, I did not know that.

Learn something new everyday. Now if I could just find a fixed bridge model with the old neck joint....

You could just install a Tremel-No on your 470 and lock it down.

Re: Which hard-tail Ibanez guitar has similar RG470 features?

Check the direction of the nut locks, as the nut has a convex surface and the lock has a concave surface which when turned the wrong way causes a gap wide enough for the High strings to pass through. This basically renders the lock useless. The larger wound strings however will still lock down. I have purchased two edge equiped guitars from people who had the same problem, and I simply turned the locks in the right direction and they now work perfectly. This is such an easy thing to miss because they appear to be fine and will fit perfectly either way.

Tremel-No ... I hadn't heard of it. That could work. I'd feel much better about keeping my 470s in action.

And yes, I'm looking for the HSH pickup configuration.

"Check the direction of the nut locks ... "

I will do that. Makes much sense.

Thanks very much,
Jerry
