http://www.stringbusters.com/ (and a few other shops) sell single strings up to 60s, so you could make up a set.

Re: heavy gauge strings... where from??

I know, guitar shops are crap carrying heavy gauge strings. I found an (not the best in terms oc cost, but still) solution was to buy a loose bass srtring instead!

I use stringsdirect.co.uk to get all my strings. I only use a Ernie Ball .56 as a low B, but ive noticed you can get .60 in other brands.

Re: heavy gauge strings... where from??

If you're used to roundwound strings, you probably won't like flatwounds. They're smooth and slick, but their tone is considerably less bright. If you play jazz, you'd probably like them for their mellow tone, but for rock, they're probably a bit too dull sounding.

Re: heavy gauge strings... where from??

You can use a flatwound for your 7th string, though. It helps if you tune low, have a short scale, or like fat strings by minimizing that sloppy loose feel. I don't use flats on my 7's, but I have two archtops with flats and they don't work for rock ;-) You could try a flat for your 7th, see if you like it. Just don't expect the sparkly overtones you get from roundwounds.

I actually do the opposite. I use flat wounds for my basic set and then a round wound for my low string. I found flats simply too muddy once they're tuned down.

And for the original poster, I use GHS compound 60's for a few years now (I was turned on to them here in fact). I order them by the dozen from juststrings.com

Re: heavy gauge strings... where from??

what i do is get a set of GHS Zak Wylde Boomers. On my Ibanez, i run the regular Zak's (it's got a .62) and I buy a .26 to fit in the middle of the set. On my dean, i'll do the same, except i'm using the Zak Wylde Lo's (they come with a .70) I've also gotten a hold of a fewother high guage strings, just talk to your local shops and ask them to get in touch with there distrubuters. I've gotten a hold of as high as a .92
