Help a blues player make his Ibanez awesome...

Title says most of it, I basically play classic rock and blues, but I love EVH, Satch, Timmons and of course Vai...so on an impulse, I bought an RG at a pawn shop.

I got a low level RG, I don't know the model exactly, but it is basswood, 3 piece neck, Edge 3, a reverse headstock and INF pickups

After messing around with it, I am shocked at the quality, for about 200 bucks (used) the guitar is really nice! (especially since I am primarily a Gibson player, if you don't for over some serious cash for them, you get a crappy guitar)

The only thing is, the locking nut is garbage, it doesn't stay in tune at all. First upgrade is a FR locking nut.

Next is pickups, I actually really like the INF pickups, espescially the bridge. I am gonna get some dimarzios, I want lots of output, and an EQ similar to the INF pickups....I have been looking at an Evo set or a Tone Zone/Air Norton

What do you guys think?

I think it's not the nut you should be blaming. There's very little difference in locking nuts for double locking tremolos. I'd sooner blame the tremolo system than the nut.

How often to you use the tremolo? If you use it a lot there's not much choice but to keep it as it is. But I think your tuning and overall playing experience would be a lot greater if you blocked it to only "go down" or blocked it all toghether (as you're a Gibson player I assume you're not exactly a trem abuser? :P)

For pickups I assume you have a guitar to be your "blues" guitar, as to get a nice BB King tone you ain't wanting high output! :P
But after researching the Evo and the Tone Zone myself, they seem great products, though I'm not sure how the Tone Zone would act in a Basswood guitar.
Unfortunately I have no experience with the Air Norton.

You'll have a hell of a time trying to work out what nut you need out of the Floyd Rose catalogue. Just go order yourself a genuine Ibanez one if there really is a problem with it. I wont be surprised if it's perfectly fine. Get the guitar set up probably, it's probably the trem that needs some adjusting and a setup.

With regards to pickups, I find it strange that someone who likes classic rock and blue wants high output pickups. I'd probably stick with low to medium output pickups. PAF Pro would be the best bet for the sounds you like.

http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech/setup/index.htm

Read that from start to finish (or atleast the links pertaining to tremolo's). It has all of the information you need to get the trem working as well as the design allows.

that's the weird part: if you like your pickups, why are you gonna swap'em? rather, save money for a nice Original Floyd Rose or a Gotoh GE1996T tremolo, if you want to really **** on them, la Vai, with no tuning issues.

The thread title was misleading....
Most of the time I play lighter stuff, I got the ibanez for heavy, crazy, gainy, instrumental shred craziness...I have Les pauls for blues.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll mess around with setting it up tonight

For high output stuff, the Tone Zone is going to be a bit muddy (IMHO) in the bridge--I stay away from it in RG guitars. For high output in the bridge and excellent tone I go for either the Dimarzio Crunch Lab, D-Activator, Super 3, or X2N if you really want to tear the roof off. For the neck position, again D-Activator, Super 2, LiquiFire, or FRED.

Cheers,

Race

I love the Tone Zone in basswood and alder, no so much in mahogany w/maple (Les Paul) though the scale length affects that too.
