Smile Help Choosing A Gibson Les Paul

I'm looking at buying a new lespaul since my 2001 Gibson LesPaul Gothic's frets are getting pretty warn and I only have one les paul.
I don't really know much about the new line up so just need some advice.

*I love the Gary Moore sound from Still Got The Blues/Seperate Ways.
*I Also want the model with the best sustain.
*My preference for neck is the thicker 50s neck, my gothic has a 59 rounded profile.
*I also like my frets thickish like my gothic.
*And I'm thinking I would like to try a rosewood fretboard as I hear they have a more rounded sound with less attack and a more traditional les paul tone.
*I'll spend up to $3000 US.

For LP advice I'd head over to The Gear Page and see what the guys there say. They're more LP than we are over here.

I'll give the typical Jemsite reply of. You don't wan an LP, get a real guitar with a proper scale length, a decent whammy bar and a proper HSH layout. Thus, instead of an LP I recommend getting an Ibanez JEM

Thanks,
You know I almost baught a Jem a few years ago but ended up with a jackson soloist. I played my teachers jem in 2003, it was the rare model with the straight hand grip but for some reason I couldn't get use to the neck and I guess that put me off them. One day i'll try another, I promis hehe.

Get yourself a nice traditional and drop a WCR Moore/Green Set in and you are 80% there
http://www.wcrguitar.com/mooregreen.html. They are un-chambered which helps with sustain. They come with 50's necks and have rosewood boards. Surely in your pricerange.

Red face Re: Help Choosing A Gibson Les Paul

Actually if you want an LP...

1-Get a Custom! The bound board and body are awesome...Lotta dough of course!

2-Get a lawsuit Ibanez...Not as much money, and of course it's an Ibanez!

The thing I find with Les Pauls is that regardless of model you get a lot of variation in feel between them.

I wouldn't stay focused on a particular model. I would get out and try as many as posiible to find the right individual for me.

I don't have any experience with those pickups but the Traditional is definitely one model you ought to take a look at.

Always good advice to try many guitars in your price range.

Speaking of which, your budget will allow you pick from the best LPs that Gibson makes. I'd look at Trads, Standards . . . at $3K, you're almost into re-issue territory.

Also check out the mylespaul forums as well.

Peace

Mike

Personally I like the Fillmores and Darkbursts. I had a set of Crossroads and American Steels and didn't much care for the bridge on either of those. I think the Moore/Green is either a set of Godwoods or Crossroads out of phase. Sustain is going to vary from guitar to guitar, and chambered vs unchambered is just one aspect.
I think a Traditional is the only model I haven't owned yet, but I've been very interested in checking them out, I just don't need another LP right now.

Give the R7 and R8 a look, you may be a little over $3K, but then you're into custom shop stuff so you'll get a solid body, long neck tennon, big neck, better electronics, aluminum tailpiece....

Re: Help Choosing A Gibson Les Paul

Get the Gibson Gary Moore BFG. Only $1400, and everything you just said you like with none of the BS.

Re: Help Choosing A Gibson Les Paul

The Les Paul Traditional I reviewed was a very sweet guitar, amazing monstrous tone.

They are Godwoods. The Fillmore Darkbursts are great.
I usually keep the Gibson 57's though.

OP are you DEAD SET on a Gibson Les Paul?

We can have other suggestions, but useless if you have your heart on fire for that name.

I sure don't. There is nothing which can replace a nice R7.

The new Alex Lifeson model has a scooped out heel on the neck to body joint. It also has a Floyd Rose.
