Help dating this 540S

Hello, I have been offered this guitar. Its a 540S in Desert Yellow. The problem I am having is identifying its year. The neck plate reads: 800730 (and its obviously not from 1980) I have included a pic of the back plate (there arenīt any serial numbers behind the headstock). Inside the back of the base of the neck it reads: PRO 540S
I would appreciate it if someone can share me any light to know itīs year or if its a special model of any kind.
Also, can anyone ballpark what would its price be? Thanks!

Re: Help dating this 540S

Thanks Corey for the pics, but I still have a question: Can you tell from the numbers in the backplate that its an ī88 model?
For example, in other Ibanez that I have, the first 2 digits represent the year, but in this guitar, I canīt understand the reasoning for its numbering... thanks

Re: Help dating this 540S

Yep, '88 is the only year that has the three pickup switches, standard knob locations and small dots on the neck.

The knobs on an '87 are much closer together and the input jack angles downward. '87 also had chrome hardware typically, no beehives and a plastic humbucker ring.

Thanks, but in the backplate there arenīt two 8īs to see that it was built in 1988. Do you thing the backplate is original to this guitar?

Re: Help dating this 540S

At the time the first digit was only the last digit of the year - 87's were F7..., 88s were F8... (or I think just 8... if on the neckplate), etc.

Re: Help dating this 540S

Hello, It only has one 8 because it is a european released guitar made in japan. It most likely was sold in germany. The distributor in germany had a special set of sabers made for them. Here is my 540s I bought new in wuerzburg germany when I was in the us army there.

Re: Help dating this 540S

Also I was informed that these guitars ordered from the german distributor are limited editions of only 1000 made. The price of that one could be between 500 and 1000 usd because of the paint being ruined. Heres my other 1988 saber. It was not a limited edition made for germany and has a different neck plate but was also made in japan, serial number F737295 is a sticker on the back of the headstock not on the plate.

Re: Help dating this 540S

Cool, that's great info! Being a European guitar could also explain the beehive knobs (US guitars didn't have them) and the H-S-H pickup configuration.

1988 is also a very weird year for serial numbers. 1987 guitars would have a solid color neck plate that was embossed IBANEZ and Made in Japan. They would have a silver sticker on the headstock with an F7... serial.

1989 will usually have the F9... typical headstock marking with the neck plate like above but with the number plate blank. They will sometimes a Made in Japan sticker on the headstock and embossed 89.... on the neck plate.

1988 is a wild card though. There is usually no headstock marking at all and they sometimes still have the generic neck plate. I've seen a few 88... Bensalem neck plates but I'd never seen one that just starts with 8.

You hit the jackpot bro, or bingo if thats your thing. The '88 540SLR (LIPSTICK RED) has the lame plate in cosmo and the silver sticker. The Limited ash transparent natural has the nice plate and nothing on the headstock but the music stores sticker where I bought it. They are out of business now. For some reason I left the sticker on the stock. Heres the proof..

Re: Help dating this 540S

The hardware on the ash guitar is so cool. I've never seen that before. What would you call that?

I feel like I've seen '88 Roadstar Pro guitars (at least US ones) that have that '87 neck plate and a blank headstock, so in effect no serial number.

Both of the guitars I've seen that had blank headstocks and embossed Bensalem neck plates were '89 model guitars (RG760 and 540P), which would have been late 1988 production.
