Help! Is this an FGM100 or 540SLTD?

Greetings guys. New as an official member to this forum but I've used this site as a solid reference countless times.

Can give me a definitive answer: Links below are for a 1990 S-style Ibanez which is supposedly an FGM100. It has features consistent with an FMG such as recessed pickup rings, however, going by the catalogs, Ibanez didn't offer the FGM in 1990, and it first appeared in the 1991 catalog. It does have some Japanese writing on the neck butt (2nd pic) indicating it's an FGM but I've never used writing as a guarantee of authenticity. Also please note that all 3 pickups were changed to Duncans, with the bridge cavity neatly deepened on one side to accomodate the deeper pickup.

I guess my question comes down to this: Can this guitar be honestly described as an FGM100 - or does the fact that it's a 1990 and the FGM doesn't appear in the US catalog until 1991 disqualify it?

Lastly, is this guitar worth more than my last FGM100, which was clearly an FGM since it was Salmon with Salmon inlays, which sold at $800 very near mint.

Feel free to email me directly at [email protected] and thanks in advance for any expert help you can provide. What a great site this is and everyone involved hopefully knows what an important service--and source of enjoyment--they provide.

If the serial number is 1990, but high, it might very well be a black '91... they usually made them early so by the time the new catalogs were produced the guitars were out the door...

My 1998 RG 7620 has an F97 serial # so this FGM could possibly be a guitar made in 1990 but released in 1991. Judging from what it says on the back of the neck where the 4 holes are, it looks like it's an FGM. Rich would know about this more actually.

The pickup rings are recessed into the body, that's an FGM.

Also, the S540LTD didn't get the AANJ until 1993.

I will definitely have to disagree here! to my knowledge the first FGMs were
pink then yellow then blue with matching shark tooth inlays, it wasn't until
the late 90's when black ones were produced, the writing is quite fishy and
I've never seen that in any other Ibanez guitars, I think whoever this is is trying to pass this guitar for something is not, personally I wouldn't buy it but I think that Mr. Ibanez Rules would know for sure if it's a fake or not!

Early [probably first batch] production FGM100BK, not a question.

I'd also like to note that I've dealt with Chris' guitars, and really liked the way they did business. He really stood out as a reputable dealer -- even trusting me to send back a case AFTER I received the guitar.

Re: Help! Is this an FGM100 or 540SLTD?

The first Gambale production included this black one with the silver sharks, as evidenced by the rolling eyes emoticon and the link above. There were no S series guitars in 1990 or 1991 that had the AANJ, besides the 540SCT6, and that had the original AANJ with the long tenon under the neck pickup, tee nuts, and oval inlays. So you can't even say that a neck swap or modification was done to this guitar to produce such a forgery. It's clearly the FGM100BK, and with a 1990 serial number, undoubtedly one of the first batch ever produced! It's a great find!

Re: Help! Is this an FGM100 or 540SLTD?

Hi, guys. I have what appears to be a 540 SLTD - ser.#F924988 - which would indicate a 1989 model. It has the FGM(Sabre) body in Lipstick Red - IBZ USA F1-C2-F2 p-up configuration - Edge trem - silver sharktooth inlays on rosewood board - bound neck & headstock - cosmo hdwr. - 22 fret neck. - Bensalem neck plate w/ no ser.# - the ser.# is a sticker on the back of the headstock . Can't find a 1989 catalog, but this is a high ser.#. What do you think? Thanks, Marshall.
