help, please. is this an alder body?

Hi. I know how to recognize ash. and mahogany. but alder was always tricky for me because i saw a lot of different grains and it's kinda hard for me to lock on and say "this is alder for sure".

so. can anyone help? alder or what?

i'm building a partcaster. and i can get a sweet deal for this pretty old, in ok condition affinity body.

but, squier being squier tends to change wood a lot, so i decided to check before i buy.

The Squier Affinity Strats are listed as alder. Bear in mind, being a Squier, the alder is probably many pieces of alder, not a two or three piece body.

Check this out. http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Bodies...odOptions.aspx
Your body is most likely alder, although, if it is an inexpensive Asian build, it could be something else.

I'll bet it's agathis. Seems most "budget" models are made of agathis these days. Plus, it sounds better than saying plywood.

If you get the year out of the neck pocket, you can look it up on their website.

Re: help, please. is this an alder body?

thanks for the input. yeah, i know the wood quality isn't great. but it should be a 7-8 year old body, +/- year or two. so i kinda hope that the wood dried up a bit over the years and that Squier used to put better materials in there then. so... maybe it could turn out ok.

I wouldn't say it's agathis. agathis doesn't look like this from what i saw. i thought it might be basswood. that's why i posted this thread.

i ordered it anyway. the price is 30€. so... if it's good, it's a sweet deal, and if it's bad i can always sell it.

i would say this is a three piece. i have a couple more pics, and i can see one joint clearly, and the other one you really have to try hard to see.

the neck pocket numbers aren't clear on any of the pics. i thought of looking it up by the number too.

i know a couple of people, and they say it looks like alder, but grains are a bit closer than normal. so... it's probably some lower class alder. it should be good enough for a budget, backup partcaster.

when i get it in a couple of days, i'll post the socket numbers.

you people rock (:

Don't worry too much about it. I've bought USA Gibsons that were really expensive and the wood was absolute garbage. I have also bought some Guitar Fetish bodies that were amazing. Wood is so inconsistent. Just because it is Brazillian Rosewood doesn't mean it's great. That's like saying everyone is going to love a $300 bottle of wine. I hate wine, period. Let your ears decide.

I've played some Gibbys that sounded like garbage even with beautiful wood. And my LTD F254 that's made of agathis sounds like a BAMF.

Re: help, please. is this an alder body?

me again.

first of all. thank you for all the replies!!!

the body has arrived. it is obvious that it has been played a lot and that it ain't young. it's got a couple of scratches, and a fair share of dings.

the finish is pretty thin. the body looks nice, i don't mind the dings. the thicknes, the pickguard holes, the routing... it all fits the affinity series. the holes are good, the neck pocket is good.

the neck pocket number isn't visible because the ink got soaked into the wood.

i've looked hard for the other wood joint and didn't found one. it turns out that it's a two piece

i took a couple more pics and did some processing (contrast, structure, sharpness) so the grain would be easily visible.

what's your take now? alder, basswood or something else?
