Help with tuners. or machine heads?

I have no idea what kind of tuners to get for my strat. locking or non locking? I don't even know what is what. Do you want locking tuners for a trem without a locking nut? I don't even know what locking tuners are.

Locking tuners have a locking mechanism on the back of the tuner itself.
It locks it at the headstock, so once youve tuned to what ya want, just lock them up! I have only used them once on an ESP I had, but I liked them. It is still no competition for a good ole locking nut and bridge.

The locking machineheads are better for fixed bridge guitars (no floyd) that you need a little bit more stability from. If you had a Les Paul for example that just wasnt holding its tuning.

They are defenitely worth a crack though. If not you can easily sell them on and buy some nice Grovers or Gotoh ones. Locking tuners hold their value I have found so youll be alright.

I was under the impression that locking tuners lock the string ends into the tuning pegs, rather than lock the gears in place.

At least that's what the schaller locking tuners do.

That is wat they do, they lock the string in place after you thread it in so it doesn't slip.
You still have to make sure the windings are tight and neat if you want to minimise any tuning problems.
I don't own a guitar with locking tuners but what I do on my cheap acoustic is I try and overlap the string excess with some of the windings (like here) and "pinch" it in place.
That prevents string slippage as well as any locking tuner out there.

So should I get locking tuners for my strat (with a tremolo) or not? Thanks for all the input so far!
