Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

Questions on a couple guitars for sale in my area.

One- anyone identify this Roadstar, or a guess anyway?

http://boone.craigslist.org/msg/2692725633.html

Second- I LOVE THIS PINK (coral mist metallic) RG... anyone tell me about 1990 RG550 build quality? Looks like he's asking too much but I'll see.

thanks- Gaucho

apologies in advance if I'm not supposed to link to such sites...

Sorry forgot to add.....Is it a choice between these 2 guitars for you??? You'll have no probs concerning the RG550 build quality.

Re: Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

Not a one or the other thing... I don't NEED any guitars! Just curious if the Road Star is a cool axe. I'm interested to try a less RG-like Ibanez... you know, 22 frets, not such a super-thin neck. What I really wanna try is a Blazer a guy has in my area, but he's not up for any trades...

Working on the 550 now!

Re: Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

Oh- the guy says there is a crack behind the locking nut (maybe from overtightening the bolts there). Says it's real common on 550's... Should I be worried?

If the neck checks out, tell me what you all think of this trade: the 1990 550CCM for my '97 520QS? Mine's in about the same shape, a bit better- but with no crack or structural issues.

The locking nut cracks are common, you'll want to assess depth and length beforehand. Small, hairline cracks wouldn't put me off.

Peace

We're local! I was just at Appalachian State last week. That Coral mist looks like a great color. You'll love the Rg550. I have one in Five Alarm and it's killer.

Re: Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

Done deal- I'm now the proud owner of a 1990 RG550 in Coral Mist Metallic... and somewhat sad non-owner of a 97 520QS.

The 550 has stock pickups, which I was actually happy about because I wanted to know what the much-maligned V6, S1 & V7 sounded like. I understand now that they're not fantastic, but I was pleasantly surprised at how not bad they are.

Disappointed somewhat with the shape the guitar is in cosmetically, but I'll love it just the same. Just paranoid about the neck crack, but I think it's stable. May be fixing that.

So now just to tweak the setup, figure out what I want it to sound like, and possibly choose new pickups to suit.

Will post pics soon...

Re: Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

Congratulations! Greetings from Raleigh . . .

Why not try fixing that crack yourself? Get some Titebond (or Elmer's, or any quality wood glue, fill the crack (really thin cracks you will need a narrow gauge nozzle/ a needle).
Clamp it from both up-down and side-side and wipe off the excess glue.

This type of guitar is a great candidate for doing something like this and you can't really make it worse (unless you use an unpadded metal clamp with gorilla pressure, or some other failure of common sense).

Peace

Mike

I agree, you should be able to do this yourself pretty easily. I would do it a bit differently, but you can surely do the job yourself.

Like Mike said...just use some common sense!!

Re: Help with two Ibanez- ID & quality?

So I just saw the photos in your NGD thread . . . here:

[Ooops! edited . . . Mike]

and I would just leave that crack alone. It appears to be very thin . . . I'd just monitor it for any worsening and just rock out. Congratulations!

Peace

Mike
