Hammer ... lots of padding... CARE!

can probably use dry ice on the posts to cool them (and thus shrink them a bit) though I guess that's a bit extreme.

Question is, why do you want to do this?

This a tutorial on tremolo replacment but there is a bit about pulling out the anchors that is relevant to you:
http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/trs2lopro.htm
or you can purchase this:

Disclaimer: I've done this on other things but never on a guitar. Be careful.

Find a deep socket that's slightly larger than the trem anchor. Find a bolt that threads into the trem anchor and is about 1/4" longer than the socket. Put the socket over the anchor, put bolt through and tighten until the anchor is pulled into the socket. If the bolt bottoms out, put some washers under the bolt head.

That's the method I've always used. Make sure to put a towel under the socket, or some other padding. It's going to be difficult getting a socket to stay on that thin ridge on a recessed Edge route. Another method is to get a piece of wood. Measure the distance between the posts, and drill two holes in the wood plank the dame distance apart. Make sure the holes are large enough for your bolts to go through. Place a towel on the body for protection. Lay the plank on the body with the holes over the posts. Put the bolts through the plank holes and screw them into the anchors. Slowly pry the bolts up.

Same as above except I set a soldering iron inside the trem anchor for a couple of minutes then screw the post back in and pull. The heat swells the area a bit and makes it easier.

My Dad actually made a pretty cool tool for doing this job. I should get some pics and post them here. From memory it was a pretty simple contraption.

Re: how do you remove old trem post inserts

My method was:

1. Place body on towel.

2. Put on some socks.

3. Take a soldering iron inside the inserts and get it nice and hot to loosen it up.

4. Screw in an old stud into the insert.

5. Clamp it with some vice grips.

6. Stand on to of the body.

7. Grab the vice grips and pull like crazy!

Re: how do you remove old trem post inserts

Here's how I got rid of my edge 3 studs, to replace them with gotoh ones( I will be making a thread about converting edge 3 ti gotoh). I put a bit of masking tape onthe posts. Used pliers, and pulled straight up, pulled out smoothly, worked fine, not overly complicated
