How to fix N?eck Heavy Guitars? V & SG, etc

I'm sure some of you older guys like me have had this happen to you before. Have you ever played a killer Gibson SG or V or any brand of the same, or any guitar that was neck heavy when you stood up and had the guitar on a strap? I hate that, but how to fix it? I've heard use a wider strap, etc? But, I'm not sure that would work. I actually passed on a guitar when shopping one time because even though they worked out a great deal on the Gibson, it was so neck heavy I had to hold up the neck to play the damn thing. It sounded great though, even better than the other Gibson's there. I really wanted it, and thought long and hard about it, but I hate that! Anyone have a for sure way to fix this problem? Is it hard and does it work for sure?

Re: How to fix N?eck Heavy Guitars? V & SG, etc

I think on some models the location of the strap button makes a guitar neck heavy. Example: I've played a Gibson ES where the strap button is located at the neck heel(stock location) and the neck takes a dive. I'm in the process of building an ES style guitar and moved the strap button to the back of the upper horn. Problem solved. I'd imagine it might be that way for a SG too. However with the Flying V you might be SOL.

Hi Silverctr.
It's funny you said you were building a guitar and moving the strap button. I read once where I think it was Jackson guitars site back a long, long time ago showed a custom model firebird Jackson guitar that was used by the then Rat guitarists. Anyway, the caption read "As it should have been built". It was a reverse headstock model, but someone told me once that they moved the strap button and it wasn't neck heavy, and I guess the gibson's were known to be, especially with the firebird model..

I've thought about building a neck thru V because I love V's and I want the guitar to of course not be neck heavy. So, I'm trying to figure out what wood to use, etc,. I'm going to try to use a heavy body wood like Mahogany probably and maple neck, etc, but a thin neck, which I wanted anyway..

Thanks man.
