how long do your frets last you?

how long do your frets last?
I mean honestly mine last about a year to 1 6months before they are flat or the dreaded worn fret V gouge under the string.
but I do play 1 to 4 hours everyday...
I really think I am going to have to switch to strats, because I can get a new neck for less than half the price of a refret in my area(400$min)

Re: how long do your frets last you?

The frets on my artcore went down pretty fast (an 06 model). but I have much older guitars with little wear. go figure. I guess it's a quality thing.

$400 for a refret?

That is very high, even if it were stainless frets (which last forever).

What model are we talking about?

Re: how long do your frets last you?

A lot depends on:

-Fret material.
-Houres of playing.
-Pressure of the fretting hand.(bending full forse?)
-Quality and state of strings.(corrosion and dirt)

Re: how long do your frets last you?

i`ve got rg`s 1uv and 4stolen ibanez all of which with flat frets, but like i said I do tend to play a lot...
I have developed over the last 30years a very light touch, last rg I got was a 350 back in dec and I`m already starting to see indents and flat areas.

I'm sorry, did I just read that right? Did you say you own 4 stolen Ibanez guitars?

My apologies if I misunderstood.

Re: how long do your frets last you?

Thats kind of like asking what heavy is, you will not get a consistent answer.

Here's a few tips to prolong fret life.
1. Use new strings
2. Get your frets dressed frequently. At the first sign of wear take it in, a well crowned fret wears much longer than a worn fret will. The wear increases exponentially.
3. Clean hands, clean neck, clean strings.

Re: how long do your frets last you?

If, after 30 years of playing, your that used to Wizard necks I have no idea how your going to switch over to a strat neck........ I'm sure you already know all of the advice above, but I'm going to second everything Musikron said........ I would also SERIOUSLY consider installing stainless steel fret's on the necks you have.... it SHOULD be the last time you ever have to refret!!!

Re: how long do your frets last you?

If I were you I will be thinking about getting stainless steel frets, my Parker has it and now I have plans for moving to stainless steel in all my guitars.

Re: how long do your frets last you?

If you get a refret done, Id suggest stainless frets. My strat has stainless frets that are 11 years old, ZERO fret wear. Its astounding honestly.

I have a 1987 radius that has very very little fret wear as well, not sure if it has had a refret in its life time, but its still alive an kickin!

Re: how long do your frets last you?

Go fretless! problem solved!!!
Intonation problems are gone too,cuz its all in your hands now!

No serious now, i personely dont like stainless frets, there too hard in feel and to harsh in sound.
I like a more softer material that plays a little smoother and sound a bit rounder.
But hey thats all personal.
I dont mind servesing my guitar once in a while(refretting)

Re: how long do your frets last you?

It took me 3 years to wear down the frets on my cheap GRG170. On the other hand, my guitar teacher has done gigs with a guitar for more than 20 years and claims to never have done a refret to it.

I wonder, is there such thing as high quality and low quality frets? Will frets on an expensive guitar last more than those on a cheap one?

I'm inclined to believe there is such a thing. My 1987 RG550 has very little wear even though it gets played the most, while a 2006 EBMM JP6 is starting to wear already and so did my first J Custom (2006), and now a 2003 J Custom.
