How long should sustain last?

I was wondering how long the sustain on an RG3550MZ should last, because i only get about 6 seconds. Maybe because the volume isn't high enough?

Re: How long should sustain last?

I think 6 seconds is fine. I think if you factor in some vibrato you could get a few more seconds...

Re: How long should sustain last?

24th fret usually doesn't get as much sustain. The 7th-19th frets are probably the best for judging...

Re: How long should sustain last?

According to some, it could go forever if the amp is cranked.

But since I like to consider sustain what happens after you play a note but before it starts feedbacking or resonating one octave above, I guess it should last around 5 seconds for powerchords if the action is set very low, or if the neck doesn't have a nice amount of relief.

So 6 seconds for single notes high on the neck sounds very good.

Re: How long should sustain last?

Yeah, it totally depends on the volume, gain, etc. Cranked up enough and in the sweet spot, it will sustain until the power goes out, though it's usually a natural harmonic.

Naturally, the less string there is to vibrate, the shorter duration it will vibrate. You are likely playing the one or two thinnest strings on the guitar at there absolute shortest length and highest pitch. This is part of the reason Vai had them scallop the top four frets, to help boost the sustain on those particular spots.

Red face Re: How long should sustain last?

You should be able to hear it! The sustain, just listen to it... You shoul be able to hear when it plays, because guitars are really famous for their sustain...I mean, you could go and have a bite and...aaaaaaaaah...you'd still be hearin' that one.

Re: How long should sustain last?

Ahh!!! I see where you're coming from JS, 'that' sustained note plated by Gazza, good observation but not the guitar I'm referring too. I may be wrong as well, lol, but I think I know that quote that Deadtune posted.
