Was this a huge mistake?

Hi,

I just got a used RG550 that i was talking about it this thread:

http://www.jemsite.com/phpbb/viewtop...6a3e33b2dd04c2

We settle for $110..i know..very cheap..but the guitar is not as in "Good condition" as he said.

He didn´t say in any moment that the Neck was BROKEN and fixed!!!..Btw..in a very bad manner..IMO
Acording to him this was made a FEW YEARS AGO!!

i put strings on it and had to change the 5 way switch and the jack..in order to get a sound..

heres a picture:

the problem is the crack on the neck:

Well, considering that, it plays very well for my sorprise..it have some buzz problem in the first fret and the 6° string..and second fret 3° string..but it seem that the problem are the frets themself..i have to file them

In gonna take this guitar as a project ...adding a Monkey grip and material finish..

So what you guys think?.. this guitar can last some time more?..

Hi matey, Jesus Christ thats what I call a cracked neck!! It doesnt look like it was fixed very well. If it wad done properly you probably would have a hard job noticing. But $110 it is well worth getting it fixed! That is a bargain even for the state its in.

The body looks very nice though, nice natural wood grain, and looks healthy. The hardware and all that look in pretty good nick too. Obviously the neck could do with a clean But I love all that me. I have a pleasure of getting a dirty guitar and getting it back up to scratch!

But overall I like it. You cant go wrong with RG550's, even it that condition.
I personally think it is well worth getting professionally fixed. Anything is better than that - you should be able to get it repaired and have it as good as new, nearly.

Yikes, is that a fixer-upper or what! I'd replace the neck for starters. Hey, have fun with it.

Hey, just call it a "relic" and resell for $1000. Actually, not a bad deal...the hardware & body are worth that much, and like you said, ideal for project experimentation.

The body and hardware looks fine. Throw away the neck and get a new one. I don't know if you could get it directly from Ibanez, since it looks like it seriously been abused. Then there is the choice getting a replacement from LGM (banner).

André

I agree.

Put the neck in a garbage can and replace it. With an Ibanez, Ibanez-copy or a Fender style. Whatever, but that broken neck is crap..

The rest of the guitar is well. I hope you can make a project or rebuild your guitar to a better condition.

I wish i could do that..but here in Venezuela is almost imposible to get a Neck for any guitar..the stores don´t carry any ...and if they did, it will cost a fortune..here a RG 470..cost around $780 w/o case!!!

i haven´t see any Rg550 or 570 in any store for a while..

i´m gonna do the Mod and we´ll see... For now it feels good enough, the Edge is a fine Tremolo..it feels as good as the lo pro of my BSB..

If anybody have a neck in USA for sale can tell me how much it cost..i have a Cousin in the state and maybe we could do bussiness..

it have to be a old neck for the original joint..no AAJ

cheers

Watch 'that big auction site'...there are usually a few Ibanez necks on there at any given time.

I just picked up another really decent shape 89' RG 550 for $135.
Damn I couldn't buy a body & neck for that little!!!!!

I'm having my favorite guitar tech scallop the neck.
With the scallop job I'm still only looking at around $200.
That's just crazy..

Even with the neck issues you have youself the basis for a really awesome project.
I'll take a beat up 550 over just about anything else for the money nowadays....
