I have returned to Ibanez!

Hey guys,

I just bought an RGT42FX and an RG7321! These guitars are amazing .

The action on the RG7321 is a little high and the pickups are a little muddy for my liking. However, both guitars are getting set ups and new pickups next week. I know that pics are mandatory and they will be posted in a bit!

Can you guys recommend some pickups? I love Petrucci's tone and I will probably buy either a Tone Zone 7 or Drop Sonic 7 for the bridge and an Air Norton 7 for the neck of the RG7321. However, the RGT42FX is a different story. Since it's neck through, which pickups will give me Petrucci's tone without making the guitar sound too bright?

+1

I own an RG7321 and can't wait to get the funds for pickup upgrades. Turns out I was thinking along the same lines as you were.

I don't have any experience/advice for that neckthrough one, though.

EDIT: Oh, ofcourse, welcome back! ... Where were you?

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

I was using a Jackson for about two years. Last year I bought a Carvin but returned it because it just didn't feel right. I used to own an RG270.

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

Awesome. I currently have a RGT42XFM and Ibanez RG7620.. similar to your guitars lol

For the RG7321, definately agree with DSonic, as thats what I have in my RG7620. its great bridge pup.. now I have the same thing for my mahogany RGT but it doesnt sound as great as it does in basswood.. its still decent though, maybe it will sound better thru your setup.. Im not sure how to classify Petrucci's tone, but I guess it somewhat achieves it..

Im hoping to try out a Duncan Custom or a Duncan Distortion for my RGT, as it fits better with my Duncan jazz neck, but id suggest trying a dsonic 6 first cause you might like it, i just find the DS6 is a tad weaker than the DSonic in 7 string form

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

Thanks guys

How would you describe the Drop Sonic 7? Does it have a clear sound? I heard it is rather noisy. Is this true?

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

I hear it is more defined if you put it in backwards, but it isn't as bright...

Also, what Carvin did you have? I LOVE Carvins!

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

Just got an RG7321 too actually and as we speak, another jemsiter is actually installing a Blaze Custom and Air Norton 7 in it. I dig it for a dirt cheap axe.

Re: I have returned to Ibanez!

the DSonic 7 is pretty clear, high output. but handles the low B string the best ive heard so far from any 7 string pickup I played.. Im sure it would even make a low F sound clear, but ive only gone down to A so far. Its really nice tho, if you like that tight metal tone. Im not a big fan of the tightness, as I like more muddy pickups like Duncans, but for a 7 string, you kinda need more tight pickups for those deep riffs so it works well

(I use the bar pointing towards the bridge, feel its more heavy that way)

In terms of tone itself, im not the best judge of that, I go thru a Pod XTL to get my tone. I havent tried it into a regular amp yet
