I just ordered my RG2550.

Ok, so I went to guitar center and managed to trade in my old Cort Katana KX1F to buy an RG2550 for $600. I thought this was a good deal, considering that I bought my Cort for $350, and they give me nearly $300 for it (I told them I bought it for $450).

As you can imagine, I want to learn everything about this guitar. It will arrive in about a week. Did I make a good choice? I know people say they love prestige necks, but has anyone ever gotten one that had fret buzzing that could only be fixed by sacrificing good action? I really care about low action, but I also hate any fret buzz.

What about sound? Since the pickups are mounted on the pickguard, it should sound different from the RG1570 and RG2570. Can anyone comment on this sound?

Thanks guys.

Re: I just ordered my RG2550.

You made a great choice. My only criticism with the 2550 (or in fact any new Ibanez) is the bland colour. Direct mounted versus pickguard mounted pickups makes barely any difference, though if I had a choice I'd go with direct mount. It wouldn't determine whether or not I bought a particular guitar, though. You'll like the 2550. I personally would do the bridge stud mod. This replaces the non-locking studs with locking ones for better tuning stability. Kits can be bought from Rich at Ibanez Rules (click the link at the top).

but the bland color on the 2550 which is galaxy black is cool... i mean it has a certain feel that it sparkles when you move into the light... cool.

That's true, galaxy black isn't bad. It just ain't road flare red!

Hey, thanks guys. Galaxy black seemed just ok to me, but I haven't seen it in person yet, so I hope i'll like it.

I was reading about the locking stud mod. Has anyone here done it? Was it difficult to install?

You've made a great choice there, Fome. The 2550 is great quality, sounds great and plays amazing. The neck is immense - mine came with a factory setup and it was perfect. It still is, I've had it 6 months now.

What's this locking stud mod? I haven't noticed any problems with the standard ones.

Re: I just ordered my RG2550.

IMHO, any one of the RG 5XX/15XX/25XX guitars are a good value. You get the same materials and parts found on their signature & high end production models, with nearly as high QC for a fraction of the cost.

Get it a good setup and I think you'll be pleased. Galaxy Black is a very cool black color, you'll like it.

I've not noticed the problem, maybe it comes with time, but supposedly the trem studs will move within the body (in or out I guess.) If that happened, it would likely cause tuning or stability problems etc.

The original Edge trem studs had tiny allen screws in them that would lock them in place, preventing the trem studs from screwing/unscrewing.

Ibanez Rules sells a mod kit to lock the studs in place.

Re: I just ordered my RG2550.

after reading the locking stud mod a few days and playing my guitar i have notice that the trem moves a little tiny bit but maybe i´m imagining thinks or seeing things... my eyes play games sometimes... but i think that locking stud mod would allow you to have an ultimate action i mean really low and the studs will not touch the wood under them.

Re: I just ordered my RG2550.

The color is cool but I don't like the pickguard. I'd swap it for a black one.

I'm curious about the stud mod too. If things go well I'll have my RG8270 by the end of the summer at latest, and it seems like a worthwile upgrade. I don't trust myself with guitar repair though, so how much would it cost to have the new studs installed professionaly?

Same for me. I'd also put some coloured pickups in there, probably red Dimarzio's.

Re: I just ordered my RG2550.

Yeah, I suppose it could take any colour cause it's black.
