I need help finding an affordable archtop

Sigh....I've looked and looked and played and played. Ibanez-Epiphone-Gibson-DeArmond. I just want an archtop hollowbody or semihollow body so i can play jazz. Im just a student so my price limit is around $1grand. I would prefer it to be in natural finish. Please. Can anyone help me find the guitar that best fits me? *

This is my Ibanez FG 100:

[size=-2:8633467711](click the pic for more pics and info)[/size:8633467711]

If you look around carefully, you can find these and the similarly configured Florentine cutaway models for about $1000. I absolutely love mine - cheap enough to learn on, good enough to keep

good luck

Seems like I've seem older Ibanez ES-175 copies for under a grand on ebay.

For 335 type, also check out Yamaha SA 1500 and 2000 models. *Just found this:

The guy got a DEAL!

Check out the Epiphone Joe Pass models.
I've heard people getting nice tones out of them, and they're cheap, especially if you get a second hand one.

I like the look of the Epiphone Emperor Regent ($839 @ musiciansfriend.com) and Emperor II (Joe Pass) ($689 at musiciansfriend.com). Both are available in natural.

Dunno what they play or sound like. What were your complaints about the guitars you've tried so far?

stuff ive played:

gibson es-335....$2069 it didnt really feel like a 2grand guitar
this ibanez archtop - price was $460 - just felt cheap
the epiphone emperor II joe pass - I liked the guitar. I liked the price. My guitar teacher said that it would need a lot of work thought, to make a good guitar.... hmm...

Right now *im fully equiped with the yamaha pacifica 112 - w00t! so i guess i could keep on working at best buy and save a little longer....for say a gibson 175 or something...i donno

If you liked the Joe Pass, get it and make incremental upgrades to it over time. What's your teacher's definition of a "good" guitar?

They're pretty simple machines, really. There's not a lot that you would need to do to improve it considerably. New pickups and electronics (i'd suggest Bartolinis... ever heard Tuck Andress' tone?), maybe some higher-quality tuning machines, maybe a high-quality compensated bridge, but that's about it. If you like how it plays and how it sounds (especially unplugged... that's the test of how resonant the woods are), improving a fundamentally "okay" guitar is pretty straightforward.

Why don't you check out Cort guitars, their archtops are really nice too, in fact Larry Coryel is one of their endorsers

i must be f*ed up or something, I always feel like im folding back when i play higher end guitars...like i don't wanna hurt the pretty finish or something...I think an epiphone would be better for me than a $2grand guitar Im a student ...still learning, besides i wouldnt wanna take an expensive guitar to jazz band practice...am i insane?

I feel the same. I can't buy a $3k guitar because I'd be to careful with it (plus, money is an issue for me; student budget...) *The guitars I love to play also take a bit of beating. I'm not throwing them around, but I'm not being too careful about their resale value or if the finish gets scratched. Actually, I think scratches and dings sort of add to the feel of the guitar. But it somehow is different when I'm holding a $3k axe... I feel the line goes around $1500 for me.

There are some nice Peerless and Eastman models under 1K
Also used models made in Korea (samick) of brands that since then have moved to China, may be real deals

I know this is the obvious answer coming from me, but you should check out the Reverend Pete Anderson Signature Model. It's based on a heavily modded Joe Pass Pete was playing for years. Great Jazz guitar - 100% pro level instrument - in your price range. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions..

Re: I need help finding an affordable archtop

I just saw a Gibson Midtown Custom at a local S a m A s H for $999 mark down from $1499. I have to add that it is heavier than a 335 but I think it is worth it at only $999
