In Which I went on a Tele buying binge

and accidentally started a collection

Mentioned my affection for MIJ 62 Custom RIs in another thread, sold a couple of higher priced guitars and went a little crazy

The black one was the original, I put a pair of Hot Rails in it, a 5 way selector and a kill switch and it's been a solid workhorse for a few years now

The red one is actually Candy Apple Red. I put on a gold pickguard and changed the knobs

The Gold is a Squier John 5 Signature. Didn't expect much from Squier quality and I'm not that impressed, a few small paint flaws, a wiring issue and the frets are tiny. Still plays decent and I'm going to put D Activators in it and replace the volume pots with better ones so the wiring issue doesn't bother me. I wish the toggle switch was an option on more teles

The Old Lake Placid Blue one just has different knobs. I bought a black pickguard for it but it doesnt fit. Apparently Japanses Pickguards arent interchangeable with American and MIM Fender parts

The White one is my attempt at a mirror image of the black one, this one has the fattest neck out of all of them, kind of disappointed with the neck, but that's what happens when you get stuff that isnt readily available here.

I bought the red one used and got a set of USA 62 Tele pickups so I will throw those in something.

Favorites to play
1)Black
2)Blue
3)Red
4)Gold
5)White

though the Red and Blue are very close, the white is a distant 5

I was a tele junkie at one time, too. They are great guitars for just about anything. The John 5 is a real simple looking guitar that can rock out against any modern metal guitar. Toss a couple of Nail Bombs in them and then you have a metal monster. Put in a good switchcraft 3 way and you have something that looks old school but has the soul of a superstrat.

very nice tele collection cid! I've only owned one Tele (pink paisley) and sadly I sold it many years ago...your collection makes me want to get another Tele someday. I like the blue one - reminds me of Canucks colors - red one is nice too but the red reminds me too much of Blackhawks ;o)

Re: In Which I went on a Tele buying binge

I did the same thing at the beginning of this year. First I bought an ASAT, then a Fender Baja which I swapped the neck to a warmoth, then I assembled one from parts, then a bought a Fugigen. I posted my build thread a few months back.

I did learn a bunch about what I like by going through this process. I like the ashtray bridges. I prefer a humbucker in the bridge although I haven't found the right stacked one yet.

Re: In Which I went on a Tele buying binge

Im leaning more and more towards replacing the neck on the J5, but between the neck and pickups I'd more than double the cost of the guitar, still cheaper than having that body made by someone else though

I just noticed the two mini Stanley Cups. Are they just miniatures or are they filled with something? There's this really great small market in town that has a lot of things like those Stanley Cups, other trophies, Elvis, mules, girls, classic cars etc that are carafes. I don't drink but I just love those cool containers.
