Ibanez 2018 RG8570Z J.Custom vs Prestige

Browsing around, I came across the J.Custom in the title.

It looks really nice, but is way more money than I've thought about spending - but isn't completely inconceivable.

One thing that occurs, though, is that the J.Custom seems about twice the price of a Prestige model that seems to have a similar spec (but is rather less pretty) - eg RG2550Z.

So you have to ask what you're getting for your money, with the double cost J.Custom over the Prestige ?

The J.Custom has a 'Super Wizard' neck, as opposed to a 'Wizard HP Prestige' [But this is no different to an RG652 vs RG1570 - the former is thinner, but not necesarilly 'better'].

Are you basically just getting 'pretty' and 'desirable' for double the money ?

not sure they are actually more desirable but you certainly get more ornamentation and in this case the Edge Zero.

Both Edge Zero, in this case - ie RG2550Z. ['Z' tends to be a clue... ]

Unless there are some crummy J-Customs out there, J-Customs are the next echelon in quality above the Prestige series. “More time spent on building the guitar by people who care about the guitar they are building yields a better guitar.” That has been my experience at least. I think you get what you pay for with J-Customs, but I think Prestige guitars offer a little more than what you pay for. I am not sure I would save up for a J-Custom, but I would for Prestige. As you mentioned, the price difference is large. Time for sleep.....

Yeah - I'm wondering if I want to go any lower in the range than 'Prestige' - even in that bracket, there seems to be a lot of variation.

If nothing else, a decent example of a 2nd hand 'workmanlike' Prestige [I'd put my knocked about RG1570 in this bracket] seems well worth looking for.

It always comes down to the neck carve for me. You can't tell how it will feel from an internet ad but you can at least get an idea of the shape.

It's quite well documented what the different neck profiles are on the various models - eg List of neck types | Ibanez Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia . You then wonder if there's much variation between nominally identical necks.

I am not personally picky enough to find big differences between necks of identical carves. If you are, then you will need some other criteria. I would personally trust that a Prestige guitar will feel fine, as long as it is close to my preference, which is the Jem carve.

I doubt I am..!

I've not actually come across two nominally identical necks, as yet. The closest I've got are those on the RG3250MZ [Super Wizard HP Prestige] & RG652KFX-KB [Super Wizard HP]; but the former has a maple fretboard (and Titanium rods), and there does seem something quite different between them - in spite of having the same dimensions (I think).
