Re: Ibanez 2020 Catalog + NAMM

It had never been settled either way, unless Thoman has their own deal worked out [doubtful] it was something that was in proposal only being talked about like it was a done deal.

Re: Ibanez 2020 Catalog + NAMM

Turns out, no one wanted to pay $5000 for a Prestige RG with a different fretboard and paint color so they scrapped it.

Seriously though, Fujigen places themselves at the top of the guitar builder food chain. While I do happen to be an Ibanez fan and I'm sure they are capable of near perfect instruments, there's a price point where people will just go other places and my guess(and I stress the word guess) they are probably over that point.

I haven't check exchange rates, but I'm assuming the dollar just does not go that far in Japan. Every time I see a guitar being sold out of Japan you can tack an extra 10%-20% on and that's before shipping or customs.

It depends, you can often find guitars from Ishibashi on Reverb that are far, FAR cheaper if you buy them directly out of the U-box. My Tokai was 1799 or so on reverb and 1200 in the Ubox, for example.

Re: Ibanez 2020 Catalog + NAMM

Here's a good example of what I'm talking about. Same Momose MTL1 Telecaster (a GREAT telecaster, btw) -
$1600 shipped on Reverb - https://reverb.com/item/29149438-mom...pping-included
Just under 1100 in the u-Box, so $1240 shipped directly from Ishibashi - https://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box/e/...d=03-316605213

$360 difference, same guitar, same seller.
aesthyrian and Hoseki like this.

I thought of the theoretical custom shop as being like the “prop models” except Ibanez would only be building 1 guitar for 1 customer. Something more than different fretboard wood and paint color.

I think you are right about people going elsewhere to buy their $5000+ guitars because outside of signature models, Ibanez has not made many $5000+ guitars, at least not for the U.S. market. So, it can be difficult to have an idea of what you are paying for when it does not generally exist. It would be a risky venture for everyone involved but it would be really interesting to see what could be made.

Re: Ibanez 2020 Catalog + NAMM

Balaguer has a semi custom type ordering system where you can select from a pre-determined list of options. I think you can call and maybe get some more options as far as pickups. It's probably the nicest online guitar builder I've used. They're Korean built and probably in the same quality range as a Premium or Axiom. A little on the pricey side just for modifying a few things though. Pretty much doubles the cost. He doesn't make many production guitars though. I like the Espada shape and the Xiphos copy.

I built a couple of "Thickets" and I agree, the online guitar builder is nice. The way it is set up makes me think a "Randomize" button could be added which would randomly select the guitar and specs and present the final result. It would be a colossal waste of time and probably would not help the brand/sales but every once in a while "chance" would come up with something unintuitively cool.

I'm pretty sure if you have the cash you can talk them into one-two Sugi or six identical Fujigen JC guitars even right now.

They're insisting on the ToL even crazier than ever these days though.
