Ibanez guitars with no serial on the back of their headstock?

Recently I've been looking at buying many high-end Ibanez models and I've noticed that a few of the ones I'm considering lack the serial numbering on the back of their headstocks.

Take a look at this BFP, for example

I've had my good share of Ibanez's in the last few years and I've never seen this. On the other hand I seriously doubt that the neck is a con since I've tried the guitar and it looked original and played great. I was wondering if it's possible that these serials just get erased with time.

Watcha guys think?

Could possibly be that they have replacement necks.

Re: Ibanez guitars with no serial on the back of their headstock?

well how does it play. the original neck is what i like most about original ibanez because you can get to such low action with out any buzz. so having a second hand neck might defeat that purpose.the picture of the one that i see up there does not even show the ibanez symbol on the neck mount plate. i dont know but most real ibanezes have that. it also looks very heavy to me. and the fake ibanezes are usually very heavy and dont resonate well. but if it sounds good and has a very low action like 2mm on the low e string then its probably real and worth getting.

also the serial numbers dont get erased over time at all from my experience. my 15 year old rg570ct has it engraved blue in its neck and its still very vivid where a blind person could read it. unless its from the 70's when they used stickers i doubt it was erased probably a replaced neck at best.

Lots of bolt on guitars with neckplates (pre-AANJ) have the serial number there on the plate. That BFP's number should be on the plate, not the headstock.

Re: Ibanez guitars with no serial on the back of their headstock?

As Jim said...

the jems with neckplates have their serial number on the neckplate, jems with AANJ (no neckplate) have their serial on the headstock. simple as that. i've had three jems and a UV, all with neckplates (777LNG, 777DY, 77FP, and UV7PWH) all with the serial number only on the neck plate, not on the headstock.

It's a real BFP.

Re: Ibanez guitars with no serial on the back of their headstock?

THX for the answers guys, I figured the BFP was all original but my main concern was whether the models WITH back of the headstock serials can somehow loose them with wear over the years. Has it happened to any of you???

I also have a JPM that doesn't have a serial but the neck is definitely original. It doesn't look as if the number faded or was erased at all, it's just as if it was never there. I'll post some pics when I have some time.

Re: Ibanez guitars with no serial on the back of their headstock?

Some in the late 80's did have stickers on the back of the headstock. My '87 560 is like that. Probably the sticker simply fell off.

Is that a JEM you have there? I think the neckplate would simply say JEM on it then but no idea if those had sticker serials. Rich would know for sure.

Lots of the RG7xx guitars had the SN# on their neckplates as well. I've seen more than a few like this, and own one.
