If you're too loyal to one brand, they will always **** all over you eventually. . . .
Ha! It's not exactly the way I would put it, but you're right!
As far as "old" semi-hollows, vintage (early eighties) MIJ AS and AM models are sweet guitars. Hard to find one that hasn't been modded too badly, but great guitars.
More recent guitars, well, the Chinese Artcore Customs are very well-made instruments. Five-piece necks, figured woods, wood binding, ball end frets.
At lower price points, they are still good values. To me the limiting factor is the pickups. The ACH humbuckers are decent, but no better than that. Mediocre. There's not a huge difference in the tone of a semi-hollow AS73 and a full-hollow AF75 and to me it's because they share the same pups.
As GuitarBizarre pointed out, check out the Swingster and the Gretsch models, too. I wouldn't get an Epihone Dot, I think any Artcore beats them, but he's right to mention that blind loyalty will bite ya eventually.
