Question Ibanez JPM P2 with P3 neck, is that fine?

So I'm inspecting an Ibanez JPM P2, year 1997. It surprised me that the neck has "P3" written on it, pics below... is it normal, or this neck is likely to have been swapped? The guitar appears to be 100% original.

Nice guitar.

It looks like the only difference between the P2 and P3 was the colour.
The P2 was 1994-1996 and was used on the Awake album and displayed at NAMM. The P3 was 1997 and used on Falling Into Infinity and Liquid Tension Experiment.
It looks like yours is a P2 with a P3 neck which seems very possible. It could have been just between the end of the P2 and introduction of the P3. 1996-1997.

Good find. Enjoy.

Just noticed the bridge pickup in the pics.
It looks like either a D Sonic [DP 207] or a Crunch Lab [DP 228]

The original should be a Steve's Special [DP 161]

As for the pickups, the previous owner swapped the original ones with a LiquiFire/CrunchLab pair.

Another interesting thing I've just noticed: I guess the colours of this guitar seem to be slightly different from all the P2's I've seen... maybe the paint faded over the years?

It's either a replacement, or it's out of a batch of late P2's some country got, and P3 marked necks were all they were making. They will use any neck that's exactly the same spec with different model number and always have.

So this is one of the last JPM P2 ever produced... interesting. Thank you for the insight.

How about the painting? Is it possible that the bright colors faded over the years for some reason? Here's another pic:

Yes, it's faded.

They made P2's again in 98, much more peach coloring.

A good choice of pickups by the previous owner.
The LiquiFire and Crunch Lab were designed especially for John Petrucci so should be better in there than the originals.

You've got a very nice JPM P2 there. Congrats.

A beautiful guitar! I would love to be able to find one of these in great condition. Well done! You can just call yours a P23!

I kinda like the faded orange in yours, makes it stand out more IMO.
