Ibanez Les Paul Copies (even says Gibson!)

Hi!

How common are these guitars? I recently saw one you-know-where. They look great, setneck and all. Are these made of solid wood or cheap laminate? I supposed the lawsuit was because of the shape, but actually displaying Gibson on the headstock?

They didn't actually make models with the Gibson name on them, did they? If i recall, they copied Gibson's guitars in every way, but put the script Ibanez logo on the headstock. (They got sued anyway.)

If you're looking at the guitar i just saw, i'm very curious to know how it's identified as an Ibanez.

I was thinking the same thing, since there's always a lot of 'Cimars', 'Pencos' ans such.

and yes, I'm positive it's the same guitar you just saw.

I just spent 20min on ebay and 20 on the Ed Roman's site and couldn't find anything.

Just search for "Ibanez Les Paul lawsuit" and you'll get four results. It's the one with the picture.

I have my suspicions that it's actually a Gibson... unless there's something on it that absolutely identifies it as an Ibanez. For $750+, it might as well be the real thing.

Thanx Darren,

It does look like the real thing, but maybe only the neck is Gibson.

There is a very similar guitar at .ebay.co.uk for 300, but that one has Ibanez inlayed on the peg head.

Check it out.

Ibanez Les Pauls didn't say "Gibson" or "Les Paul Model" on them, as far as i've been able to determine. They had the script "Ibanez" logo on them and nothing else, or they had the diamond pattern if it was a Custom.

I can't see that being just a Gibson neck on an Ibanez body... you don't get mis-matches like that on set-neck instruments, because dovetail joints are finicky things, and you'd have to refinish the whole guitar.

It's either a real Gibson, or somebody has had the headstock face stripped and re-inlaid with the Gibson logo and the Les Paul decal. If it's a Gibson, it's a decent price... if not, i wouldn't bother.

There's no "inlaying" involved. Both Gibson and Ibanez logos are just like this. You can see how easy it is to change it.

If it's a Gibson......why would the seller say it's an Ibanez?
On the other hand, the copy selling in the UK looks great, I wish I could find that here for that price (or just find it!)

I'm guessing the seller knows something about it we don't. We may see it come back listed as a real gibson by a not-so-ethical ebayer.
did the ibanez have that same "open book" headstock profile? I thought the ibanez was slightly different. I never really looked that close at them.
either way, its $250 more than a typical lawsuit paul would cost, and $500 less than a real gibson.

THe good lawsuit copy is identical open book and all, and the ibanez logo even LOOKS like the gibson logo till you look real close. Thats why they almost got sued out of existence

Here's a link which shows catalog pics with no headstock label:

http://www.ibanezvintage.com/copies.html

So many factories made (and are still making) LP copies, I wouldn't doubt some came with "Gibson" logos before the law suits.

The early (and current) MIJ copies vary in quality...many are excellent. You can see all the variations from Ibanez alone in those catalog pics. The Ibanez I had was a two-piece sandwich body & bolt neck...still played and sounded nice. Also had an Electra (probably same factory) with a flamed maple top...same construction. I believe some of the higher end set neck Ibanez's had solid bodies.

Here's an interesting blurb on this subject from Paul's site:
