Ibanez n00b needs help determining a specific S Model

Hi all!

I'm looking to pick up a used S as my first real-deal Ibanez, but I'm having difficulty in determining the exact model. I'm hoping someone on here can help me out.

Here's what I'm looking for in order of priority:
- Made in Japan
- Smooth Neck Heel (NOT a fan of the square plates!)
- Original Wizard neck (or slimmest/thinnest profile offered)
- Trem Optional
- Lower side of $400-$500 if possible

Based on what I've researched thus far, some of the early 90s S470s fit the bill. Is this correct?

On a side note, I hear they come with TRS trem systems that aren't exactly held in a high regard. Is replacing one with an Edge (or another high quality trem) particularly difficult?

Thanks for all the help!

Look for an s540.

Early s470's were MIJ with an edge. Later ones were MIK with a TRS.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've only found S540s with the square back plates. Are there any MIJ models with the smooth neck heel?

They switched to AANJ in about '92-93, when the name changed from 540s to s540.

Did the S get the AANJs before the RGs?

If you can find one, the Ibanez S Classic was a good all around guitar made in Japan that is never too pricey.

You specifically want the '93 S470 or S540. Other than pickups and fretboards, they are identical guitars
