Ibanez NECK THRU

Hey, I was wondering if one of you kind souls could please tell me which Ibanez models come with the neck thru design? Also, do the necks on neck thru guitars come unfinished? I much prefer an unfinished neck for ease of playability...THANKS

No necks will come completely unfinished, they might have an oil coat or satin poly so it feels unfinished, but they have a finish, unless its a custom or something. Production guitars will almost all have finished necks.

RGT3120 if you want a Prestige.

Re: Ibanez NECK THRU

Have you guys tried out the RGT220A? Thats the one I'm thinking of getting. Is the back of the neck on that model unpainted? What neck profile does it have? Overall, how would you rate this guitar?

yes, regular 220, 26001 as well
not unpainted, clear polyurethane gloss
wizard
9 out of 10.

A shame they're no longer available. The last one made was the '08 RGT220Z. The RGT320Z was still available in '09, now discontinued as well.

does the back of the neck get sticky when playing or does it feel smooth?? Does the back of the neck have as much gloss on it as a strat?

American Master Series, anything starting with "RGT"; there have been a variety of those over the last 10 years.

I've found that necks feeling 'sticky' is almost always due to failure to wash your hands before you play, which you should do anyway to preserver your strings.

Not sure about the RGT necks being sticky, but there's no stickiness to the neck of my '86 PL2550

Yes my oil finished RGT2020SOL feels smooth enough. Itīs from 2004/2005. I hate the gloss finish back of necks too.

despite the SOL in its name, that RGT2020 has the same basic polyurethane finish on the neck as every other MIJ RG/RGT, you can see the difference in the final 2mm where the body wings meet the neck. And yes, they are all smooth, but those necks aren't oiled. The key is not in what finish is used (oil, poly, nitro) but how that finish is used (hand finishing etc.)

How glossy or how matte the finish looks and feels differs from year to year and model to model.
Typically the RGT3020/320 with flame/quilt tops have their body colour fade onto the neck (see 2nd atachment),
with a more glossy and thick looking finish, while the "unfished" looking RTG2020/220 (mahogany or ash) have a matte looking finish.
But despite the different look of these finishes they can feel as smooth.

The latest RGT320Z guitars had full body coloured necks (1st attachment), but AFAIK the gloss doesn't feel the same as the body paint,
as it will still benefit from the same hand finishing steps every prestige neck gets.

But they are all polyurethane. It wouldn't suprise me if the SOL body finishes were polyurethane as well.
SOL is just a name, it doesn't mean they actually used a special oil.
The body on the 2020 is also more glossy than the MOL (matte oil) finish used on the MMM1MOL.
The same finish on the RGT2020/220 in Ash was called NTF (Natural Flat)

thats it in a nutshell!, washing your hands before you play not only saves your strings, it also removes oil-sweat from your hands that will drag on the neck as you play., it also gives your hands a nice warm massage and helps you loosen up and relaxes the muscles and tendons in your fingers, it should be done every time you play, it makes a big diffrence.
