Hey,

I looking into getting one of these guitars.
Which is better for getting close to a JPM?

Other recommendations are also welcome

Thanks!

Honestly, with the right pickups and amp either one will do the job. If your looking for the better QUALITY guitar, the 3120 FAR outweighs the 920.

Thanks!

The mahogany body on the 3120 doesn't make a big difference compared to the JPM's basswood?

Yes it does, but both sounds great.

The 3120 will probably be darker and fatter sounding right?

Prestige all the way! I have 3 Ibanez Prestige models and they are beautiful guitars. The Premium models that I've tried did not compare.

The maple top makes it pretty bright actually, but my JPM is a very thick and loud sounding basswood guitar compared to most my other basswood ibbies. I kept the steve's special in my JPM because the guitar has a very punchy mid.
Only my Jem90 is as loud as the JPM. You get what you pay for.

Re: Ibanez Prestige RG3120 vs Premium RG920QM

Hands down the RG3120, one of the best Prestiges ever made! I actually just recently bought a DR to go with my TW. My band mate has an RG920QMZ and there's no contest really..

Like RGTFanatic said, with a pickup swap, both will work, but if you want a quality MIJ RG, the 3120 is the way to go. Something special about their mahogany body / maple top.

Re: Ibanez Prestige RG3120 vs Premium RG920QM

Had both but ended up getting rid of them for different reasons.
The RG920 just felt like a toy compared to the RG3120 which is why I got rid of it. I later sold the RG3120 not because of anything wrong with it, just that the neck was too thin for my playing tastes these days...

I'm in the same boat, my 3120 has a JPM neck and a middle single coil, IBZUSA F2 in the bridge and sounds huge.

How did you get a JPM neck?

I always buy a JPM neck when it comes up for sale, so since 2003 I've got four (I think) so they don't come up for sale very often.

Re: Ibanez Prestige RG3120 vs Premium RG920QM

There is nothing wrong the RG920, if you find one without any factory issues. I own one that's great and definitely find it mostly on par with my RG2550. Sure if I were gonna sell one (and I've thought about it) it would likely be the first to go, but every time I pick it up and play I reconsider that. I've had it for 2 years and I'd only consider selling it over my SZ520 because the 520 is my only hard tail (as well as not being JEM/RG based). I don't even hate the stock pickups. I'll try to avoid the urge to plug my (sub-par) video of me playing it.

Gear:
RG 2550 w/ evo2 breed neck
SZ520 paf pro neck stock bridge
RG920 Premium
Jem7V-WH
Marshall Haze 15
