Ibanez prototype guitar...

Hey everyone! I just picked up a 1988 Ibanez saber that is believed to be a one off for a marketing group. It was obviously never put into production but maybe you guys can give me a little more info on it. I know it was made at the Bensalem PA shop but thats about it. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Also if you know of websites or ways to contact people that worked there that would be even more helpful! Email me at [email protected] with any info.
Thanks!
-Andy

Re: Ibanez prototype guitar...

It's no prototype. There can be 100 variations on a theme. That was at a time you could ask for something specific and probably get it.

The bodies were imported routed for bridge humbucker only. That one has no upgrades done to it. It was simply painted and had a neck slapped on.

Nice guitar -- love the fretboard. I'd prefer to have either a HSS or HSH config...

Re: Ibanez prototype guitar...

Rich is right. It's all Japanese, they just screwed it together in PA.

On the same topic, I got this body: 150002230770 and it's from back then. It was NEVER BUILT! It's brand new old stock, and the holes aren't drilled for the electronics cavity, bridge hum mounting ring (I'll direct mount it) the trem claw (that's how you know for sure it was never built, EVER) No pickup screwholes were drilled either, so there've never been single coils in it. I'm sure it's Arctic Blue painted OVER Black Cherry, but done by Ibanez either in Japan or PA. It's a true Ibanez poly finish, not a "refin". Anyway if it hadn't been routed for the two singles, it would be the same as your guitar. And it's kind of funny that mine's Black Cherry underneath, too.

If I had yours I'd probably route it for H/H, or something neat like a P-90 or minihumbucker in the neck. I like H/H Sabers. Oohh imagine it as an H/H with smooth covered Bartolinis...

They've still got maybe 50-100 boxes of that stuff clogging up the center of the warehouse and the upstairs at HUSA.

Any chance of buying a replacement neck for it from them?

You can't just buy necks in the US. Plenty on 3bay.

Re: Ibanez prototype guitar...

Interesting that they have that much product put back and no outlet for it. That would seem like a massive money sink wouldnt you think?

Re: Ibanez prototype guitar...

Most of thier product is a cash cow. When the M100 changed to blue lined I heard they threw out 90 cases. I wish somebody called me, I'd have dumpster dove.
