Ibanez RG 550 bizzare neck

Hallo everybody, i've been reading a lot here but just registered cause i got a question that bugs me abit.
I got an Ibanez RG 550 '97 RFR, and just mesured the neck's width. It is 41, not 43 mm. Basically there is not other problems, but this bugs me cause a frind's RG550 seems to be 43 mm, cause i just feel it wider and unfortunately more comfortable. So anyway can someone tell me if this is due to the year 1987 as i said or is it pretty common or not? Thanks again in advance!

Really? I find that hard to believe. Everything I've seen in writing (and with my own guitars) suggests that they are all 43mm, regardless of fretboard material. Where are you getting your information from?

Well it's maple, so... it is not that, maybe i should've said it earlier sorry for that, but i thought that fretboard material is not important for that, and i still do. Anyway i guess it's just a...misfortune

That makes no sense because the necks are cut the same regardless of the fretboard material. There were some guitars produced in 97-98 that featured a 41mm width at the nut. I can think of a number of scenarios that could explain how your guitar ended like that, other than the possibility of a neck swap later down the road.

Did you pull the neck off and inspect the stamps in the neck pocket and neck? It may help shed some light on this.

Re: Ibanez RG 550 bizzare neck

No i haven't but I'm pretty sure of the guitar's origin and i know the previous few owners. Besides the neck is '87, no stamp only a sticker, and i don't think that there was a neck swap, and besides all that the color of the headstock is absolutely the same, you know faded, pinkish RFR. It's not a very big deal, but it's good to know that i'm not the only one. Thanks for the opinions, i'd be interested to see some more. At first i was disappointed but now i feel kinda special

Nope.
I just measured my 550R and 550M necks at the nut--both are 43mm.

Then the fretboard would be narrower than the maple neck it's attached to....
Let's not forget that these same necks were used on all 500 series RGs. Why doesn't a rosewood fretboard on a 570 shrink? It's the same neck.
