Talking Ibanez RG 570/550 Donnie project

I have been waiting to do this for a long time - An Ibanez RG Donnie!

A combination of three of my favourite features - the look and playabilty of an RG neck and body, FRED and PAF Pro pickups all with the paint job of an Ibanez JS Donnie.

The body is an RG 570 and the neck is a RG 550. The first stage will commence with a clean up of the body commencing this weekend. The body is in quite good condition - the neck pocket has no finish cracks at all and the main face of the body is in great condition. There are a few minor dings and chips on the edgse. Here is my first problem - any idea on what is the best filler to use on the body prior to a the first coat of primer?

The neck is in great condition with no cracks or dings whatsoever - not bad for a 21 year old neck!

Trem and hardware will be a Lo Pro Edge in Cosmo and at this stage the pick ups will be in white (FRED/ PAF Pro).

Stay tuned for pictures this weekend when works commence!

Re: Ibanez RG 570/550 Donnie project

bondo is a great filler for guitars

are you asking how to fill in your middle pickup? I did that to my s540, came out ok. just get a plastic tube to run through the pickup (a straw works ), so you can still run your pickup wires through.

Thanks for the comment. I won't be filling in the middle pick up, just the small dings in the body.

Have primed the body with 2 coats. I have some sanding to do and another two coats of primer prior to works commencing on the white coat.

More pics to follow shortly.

Re: Ibanez RG 570/550 Donnie project

Pic update. http://img163.imageshack.us/g/img8246c.jpg/

One more coat of primer tomorrow and then over the Easter weekend I will try and get the white base coat on and then I can start on the main graphic.

I was going to airbrush the graphic but it appears that the original was hand painted. I am figuring the airbrush will be neater and easier however I want to get the look and feel of the graphic right.

And will need to check if Rich has any 'as new' original Edge's in stock with the Top Loc III locking nuts.

Re: Ibanez RG 570/550 Donnie project

Just purchased the tremelo and nut from Rich (thank you again for your assistance Rich). I have gone with an original Edge trem. Now I need to source the correct pots, pickup selector, input jack and Dimarzio evolution single coil pickup.

Should be more pics of the build up tonight.

Re: Ibanez RG 570/550 Donnie project

Any 500K pots will work--just make sure to get the shorter shaft version. I also suggest getting a super or mega switch, instead of the typical YM-50 like on all other 550s and 570s. With a super or mega, you can wire your pickups for many more options.
