Ibanez RG520QS - Any advice please!

Looking for some advice - there is a RG520QS for sale locally for about $400 US and I'm wondering if this is a good guitar & a good deal or not.

I'm not familiar with this model but I do know that it's made in Japan. Has anyone tried this model and if so is this a good RG? is $400 a good deal for this guitar? Any advice/guidance would be appreciated =)

Price depends on condition. The RG520QS is a decent guitar--tru to the MIJ lineage. It sports 2 humbuckers and an Edge trem. $400.00 seems OK is if it's in great shape, but I've seen them around $300.00 USD quite frequently.

I like them a lot, they are the mahogany RG.

This one looks pretty mint - I believe it's the original owner selling it and he says he paid over $1,000 new. It's kind of a strange colour - it's like a gloss root beer colour...I don't really love the colour but it seems like a pretty good deal for a nice RG with an original Edge trem. It has the original V7 & V8 pups, which I haven't tried but I could swap those out for about $150 if they aren't so good...

Re: Ibanez RG520QS - Any advice please!

The 520Qs is IMO one of the best RGs ever made. I own two.

As for value, Alaska Bat's correct. I've seen several recently at local sales for right around $300, in pretty close to mint condition with case.

That being said, if you're looking for a great sounding and playing guitar, and aren't in it to get maximum resale value, I'd recommend the 520QS any day of the week, and $350 to $400 still isn't a terrible price, it's just not bottom dollar.

Also, as for the V7 and V8, alot of people rag on them, and they're not aftermarket quality pickups for sure, but they're also not terrible in this particular guitar.

lol...thanks guys - I'm thinking I'll likely make the plunge, as long as it passes inspection tomorrow - I'm going to meet the guy in the morning so I can play it and see if I like it. It seems like it wouldn't be a bad investement cuz I'm willing to bet I could sell it later in life for close to the $400 asking price if need be...I would think it would hold its value fairly well at a $400 cost to me.

Re: Ibanez RG520QS - Any advice please!

Love the 520's

RG's are the only way. Has to do with standing with the guitar. Fits my body and stance perfect. Went through a small bout with S series but they feel just a tiny bit funny with a strap on. Ha, he said "strap on".

Edge trem, super wizard neck (watch the neck crack mind you!), 2 pups (I like 2 pup guitars for dropped D myself. 550 style with 3 I keep in standard, heavy hitting a bit in dropped and I won't strike middle pup with pick), nice top although the back of the guitar looks better if you ask me...

...and if you DO ever decide to part with it, I'll be glad to make a deal for it.

Watch the neck crack? Not sure what I'm supposed to watch for... Are they prone to cracking at the neck joint? not sure what you're referring to here?

The back of the neck where the two locknut bolts come through is prone to cracks from overtightening the bolts.

I've kept mine for a long time now... it's one that I've never been tempted to part with.

Re: Ibanez RG520QS - Any advice please!

I have one in blue, nice guitar.

I'm thinking of selling mine though, just got an RG2570EXVSL and the 520 never comes out of the case...

Not that there is anything wrong with it, I'm just loving the Prestige feel... my 1990 RG550 feels the same, but it's 20 years old, so there's something to the Prestige addition...

Anyway, I digress...

Get the 520, you'll love it... if it still has the V7-V8 P/UPs you may want to change them, other than that, the one I have sustains for days... feels great, plays great and, like all Japanese RG guitars, are true work-horses that will never let you down.

$400 seems a good price, as long as it's in great shape... it is still 'just' a production-line RG, and when they were new were not a whole lot of money to begin with.

$300 to $400 is average, but if it has replacement P/UPs, $400 is a good price.

Re: Ibanez RG520QS - Any advice please!

Lots of great info and advice - thank you very much to all of you - your advice & insight is much appreciated!!!

So, after reading all of the posts and the review I went out and bought the guitar (it's the same colour as the one in blackspy's review). The guy had the guitar listed in the buy & sell for $395 and I was hoping to get it for a little less but he also had an Analogman TS-9/808 mod pedal for sale so I was able to get the RG and the pedal for $440 CDN. He was a nice guy and gave me a package deal - and I thought it was a pretty smoking deal considering those Analogman TS pedals cost about $165 US new.

It is a very nice guitar - and I really like the neck. I have a new RG prestige and the necks on the new ones are wider (58mm last fret) than the neck on this guitar and I like this one better. Excited about cranking up this mahogany RG through my rig (I didn't have any mahogany guitars until now

Thanks again for all the posts that helped me decide to make the plunge here and I am very pleased with what I came home with!
