Re: ibanez RGT 220Z NTF or RG4570Z HB

Well, I've tried the RG4570Z HB and liked it a lot, especially the neck, but it was like 2599$ (canadian) and I couldn't justify spending that much on a mass production japanese guitar with maple veneer when I could get a US made custom shop Charvel or neck-through Jackson... so, if you can convince yourself to spend that kind of money - go for it I mean, the neck on 4570 is amazing, probably the best Ibanez neck I've ever encountered on these "prestige" models.

RG4570Z has H-S-H pickup configuration which means it has a single coil in the middle. This may put off some people, depending on how you pick (the single coil could get in the way). Also you might question if you will ever use that single coil... if you play a lot of metal you might prefer to have only 2 humbuckers

RGT220 is neck through... I believe it has the same neck as my own RGT320 so it's very nice and upper fret access is incredible. So that's a plus for the RGT220

I personally don't like the looks of the RGT220Z in natural finish... too raw for my taste.

If you break the neck on the RGT it's bye bye guitar... whereas on a normal RG you could always get a new neck.

I would go with the RG3620Z which is basically the RG4570Z without the single coil in the middle but may be hard to find and still too expensive even though it's not this years model. I love it in blue!

In the end, try them both and follow your heart!

Re: ibanez RGT 220Z NTF or RG4570Z HB

hi. tks a lot. very useful commentary.
i dont matter about the single coil.
I have the chance to buy a rgt 320 in violet crystal , for the same price of the rg4570z. (1850 €).
What can u say about the rgt 320 you have?
ive heard the coils are no so heavy for metal o hi gain distortion.
thanks

Re: ibanez RGT 220Z NTF or RG4570Z HB

Hi!
I have sort of similar guitars, 1 is sold.. RGT-2020SOL and RG20071 (the sold one). In my situation both are mahogany bodied (that i prefer). The pickups dont count, you can always swap them. Just like in your situation, in my situation the RGT has a bit thicker neck. Maybe the RG20071 had a bit faster neck, but the RGT handles lower tuning a lot better and has way better sustain, but that comes also becouse its neckthrough. On the RGT youll reach the highest frets a bit easier, coz of the construcion and design. In your situation the woods are different, mahogany against ash. I dont know too much about the ash bodies, but i think i would give it a try.
I defenately like and keep my RGT over the RG20071. Your RGT is cheaper too, i think you should go with it. If you like natural finish, you wont regret it! Do some research and listen to the tone of ash bodied guitars! Then get the RGT!! )

Well I like my RGT a lot. The pickups that come with it are fine for distortion I think, at least in standard tuning. I think new strings and the right amplifier matter more than the pickups you use. If you want clarity in low tunings then I don't know if they'll provide you with that but you can always switch them out but for the classic rock stuff and soloing they are good in my opinion. The neck feels really nice and the fret access superb. I wouldn't say the sustain is better than on a bolt on guitar but that might be my setup as my strings are low.

But in any case if possible you should try them both and see how it feels. The RGT320 and the RGT220 should feel very similar, however the back of the RGT320 neck is painted entirely, so someone with abnormally sweaty hands can have a problem with it as it tends to stick a bit and prevent your hand from sliding like butter.
