Angry Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

I need help deciding what's going on. About a month ago, I bought an S5470 TKS series guitar off of eBay. The reason I bought one was SPECIFICALLY because I was excited to feel the awesomeness of the 17-19mm thinness of the neck!

First of all, before this buy, I owned an RGA121 NTF which has AMAZING Wizard Prestige neck with 18mm at the first fret, and 20mm at the 12th.

When I first held the S5470, the neck felt a lot fatter than my RGA121. So I decided to take a caliper and measure both necks for myself. The S5470 had 18.38-20.53mm and the RGA121 had 18.30-20.47mm.

I'd post pictures, but this site won't let me because I haven't posted 10 times or greater.

Maybe this little millimeter doesn't seem like such a big deal to anyone, but that was the main reason I was looking forward to the guitar. So, there's a few possibilities here... Either I bought a really on-point fake S5470 from eBay, or the seller on eBay actually switched the necks, OR Ibanez didn't actually ever make a 17-19mm thin neck.

The measurements for both guitars are basically exactly the same, but when I hold it, it just feels fatter. It's definitely not in my head, because even my friends can feel it and they don't even play guitar.

The feeling might be because the S Series had a rounder contour or something, but either way, it isn't as thin as Ibanez says so. Maybe I have the '08-'09 version where it has a Wizard Prestige neck instead. But even then, that's the neck that my RGA121 has, and it definitely doesn't feel the same.

If anyone with a Super Wizard HP Prestige neck is up to posting images of their neck with a caliper showing 17mm or 19mm, please do so.

that would be my first guess, but recently I just played ( at store) the RG570 ( genesis/re-issue) which has 17-19/58mm neck, and yes.. it does feel like 17-19mm, very thin.
so to answer your question, the 17-19mm does exist, but in your case.. I don't know what is happening.

I have a 09 RG1550 and it FEELS fatter but it's supposed to be the same thickness as the current Prestige wizard (Which I have with my rg2550). I think the necks in 09 were designed a little rounder than the current necks which makes them feel a little fatter. They may generally be fatter but I've never actually measured my 1550 or 2550 so I can't say with scientific certainty, but the feel is different.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

From the specs I see over the internet, the original wizard I have on my FGM400QM should be 17mm/20mm.
But it is a 16.9mm/19.3mm.
What a scam... I paid for more wood than that ! :-)

Perhaps the OP should refund him as he seems to have gotten the wood due to Heep.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

Like mentioned above,if your S5470 is not 2010 or newer you do not have a super wizard neck.

You're talking about a difference of 1.3mm at the nut and 1.5mm at the heel. Go pick up a metric ruler and look at that.

If it REALLY bugs you that much, sand the neck down and put a couple coats of tung oil on it.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

Yeah I think I'm just gonna pay a guy to sand down the shape of the neck. Sort of go from a U contour to a C contour. I feel like that's the only difference I'm feeling between my two necks. Being that they both measured 18mm and feel different just has to be it.

Sorry! Didn't mean to make anyone think I was all THAT picky, I just wasn't thinking of the contour. And neither were any of you guys, obviously.

But thanks for all the replies! Ha.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

Just out of curiosity, what is the serial number on the back of the headstock?

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

Fujigen serial number indicates 2008 manufacture year.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

You could always snag an old RG770 to get the feel for the 17mm/19mm necks. It's hard to beat the classic Super Wizard if you're looking for thin.

Re: Ibanez S5470 NOT actual measurements.

The neck is correct for a 2008 guitar. The guitar has a Wizard neck profile.

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/...t_id=380&now=2

The dimensions you measured are about exactly right for an 18/20 neck. I've measured around 20 different Ibanez necks and they're almost always just slightly larger than the listed dimension by a few tenths of a millimeter.

To get the neck you're after, you'd have needed to buy a 2010 model with the Super Wizard HP neck. There are good comparisons in the 2010 catalog.

From the US catalog:

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/...t_id=388&now=2

The picture is larger in the Japanese catalog. They use different names but the picture is the same:

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary_...at_id=62&now=2

It's hard to see but the Wizard HP is flatter across the back and just a tiny bit less thick than the Ultra HP. More U-shaped, less V-shaped.

Here's the other thing you don't know: original 1987-93 Wizard necks were 17/20, not 17/19. The first actual 17/19 necks were on J.Customs produced around 2003 but they didn't appear on standard guitars until the HP necks came out in 2010.

The HP necks have titanium reinforcing rods, which is how they get away with having such a thin neck. The reason Ibanez made the necks fatter in the 90's was to try and make them more stable and less prone to warping and other issues.

RG770's had Wizard necks with 17/20 dimensions. The "Super Wizard" is what people call the bubinga stripe Wizard necks that Ibanez came out with in 1997. They're never called that in the literature. The catalog specifically states that they have the same dimensions as the original Wizard necks. This was a change from 1994-96 when RG5XX guitars used Wizard II necks.

^ Derp. I think that was somewhere in the back of my mind.

Man, a little while away from this place and I forget everything! Thanks for the brush-up.
