Ideas for customizing rg2550z

guys i have some cash at hand....and i m really impressed by the rg3550mz......but the fact is that i personally dislike the bright maple sound......so i was thinking of getting an rg2550z and fitting it with dimarzio liquifire and crunchlab and leave the stock pu in the single coil..........

my question is .......IS IT WORTH IT??? and should i change the single coil too???....my approximatecalculations at the local site shows the total is almost equal to my rg3550mz price(a teensy more but i can live with it).......i play metal mostly,...mainly dream theater, symphony x, bodom, lte, and sometimes the odd jazz, and even pink floyd and porcupine tree if i m in the mood.......i am looking for a warm rich sound with lots of sustain....along with the fabled prestige neck.....

so guys tell me should i go for this customization?? would it be worth spending so much??? or should i consider other pus like seymour duncans?? or maybe another guitar altogether.....

really need a reply within a few days...cheers...and thanks in advance....

Re: Ideas for customizing rg2550z

I have a 2550z and actually upgraded the pups to exactly what's in a 3550. I bought the guitar and then changed the pickups several months later. I never totalled it up, but I think it was slightly less (in my case) overall than just buying the 3550.

anyway, the guitar is great. I play a lot of metal and a lot of jazz and it works well for both.

you could do pretty much the same though with a 1550 or 1570, and save quite a bit. ultimately it's up to you whether it is 'worth it' or not. sorry to say that but it really is. all the prestiges are good guitars though, imo. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything.

here's it is anyway:

Re: Ideas for customizing rg2550z

rg1550z is the same guitar as the rg3550z but without the looks and nice pickups. but since your changing the pickups ANYWAY, then your just getting an rg3550 with boring looks. make sense?

HOWEVER, if you dont like the maple, get the rg1570z. no pickguard and has a rosewood board.

THEN! is get the dimarzio d-activator X set. and just for s**ts and giggles, put a dimarzio FS-1 in the middle.

that will be one badass guitar!

I fully agree with this............the 1550/1570 are every bit as high quality as the 2550 or the 3550. You'll save yourself a LOT of money buying one of these and upgrading the pups.

Re: Ideas for customizing rg2550z

okay.....so i played the 2550z at a friends....the quality hits the money...bang on target guys...........it would sound splendid with pu upgrades.......but considering the 1570z......is the low price solely coz of the pus in it??? is the quality really the same as a 2550z???

it's the same but the 2550 has the ghost teeth inlays (or whatever they're called), and binding, and the stock pups are (supposedly) better, although it seems that everyone swaps out the stock pups from the 1550 and the 2550 anyway.

the 1550 is a much more bare-bones-looking guitar, with dot inlays and no binding, but playability-wise it should be the same as the 2550 or 3550 (although the 3550 also has the super-wizard 17mm neck). all the fret finishing and general quality should be the same though.

you should be able to get a new 1550 or 70 and buy the pups you want for the same price, roughly, as a new 2550.

no, it's just cosmetic. the binding does cover the fret ends, and on some (lower quality) instruments the fret ends are not always completely flush with the edge of the fretboard, so in that case binding would make a difference as you could sometimes feel the edge of the frets, but in this case it's just for looks. you won't notice it when playing.

I think your making a wise choice Raze. As far as pickups go, It would be best to listen to as many youtube clips as you can find. With the lack of sound quality on most of their videos it's best to hear LOTS of them to get a true idea of how each sounds. I'm a big fan of the D-activator set but I don't have any experience with the CL/LF. to make a comparison.

If you go to the "comparison shopping" tab at the top right of this page you can read and hear all the reviews that Jemsite members have compiled over the years.......your pickup choices included. It's a very useful resource with honest, unsolicited reviews.

rAze2000, I appreciate that English may not be your first language, but please refrain from using multiple full stops as your only means of punctuation. Also try to avoid simply typing "u" instead of "you", sentence structure can go a long way to helping people help you.

Thanks in advance
