Information About Rare S540QM

Hi guys,

I recently purchased this guitar from Japan (some of you may have seen it on eBay). It plays fantastically well and I love it to pieces. However, I'm wondering if I could get some information about the guitar as the serial number is nothing like my other MIJ or MIK Ibanez guitars.

The serial number is "603308". Not even a prefix to state which Japanese factory it was built in.

Any help will be appreciated!

I swear I've seen that kind of serial number before, but forgot on what guitar.
If I'm not mistaken it's on very early J custom.
Some says that the guitars were made in Haruka factory, but later Fujigen bought that factory.

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

I've looked in every catalogue and couldn't find this guitar. I was wondering if it was a true "Custom Made" S, or perhaps a J-Custom precursor. I hope that you're right suggesting that it's a very early J-Custom.

OK, now I remember.

That kind of serial number, I've seen it in some "japanese only model" or some 'store exclusive' model, but not J custom.

It's earlier than J custom.

The model I've seen with same kind of serial number was a RG with real thick quilt maple top, not a veneer.

I'll see if I still have the picture of it.

Thanks for the information.

Do you know how I'd go about finding out the year of this guitar?

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

Now, that's very tricky my friend.

Normally with the serial no starts with 6, we assume it's either : 86 or 96.

86 : very little chance it's 86.
96 : highest possibility it's 96, as all the ingredients except for the IBZ-F series pickups were used in 96.

So I'll say it's 96.

That's a beautiful guitar. The way the S should've always been (with no pickup rings).

I agree... That quilted green S540 with gold hardware is one of my all time favorite Ibanez guitars. Never owned one, but always lusted for one!

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

I saw that on the bay a while back, I was intrigued but didn't bite.

I don't think we can say it's a '96 because of the serial number, without the 'F' it may be a different format completely. I would guess '93-'94: '93 is when they started with AANJ / lo-pro, and '94 is the last year of the IBZUSA pickups.

I have a Hirooka pre-JC, the serial number is a standard "F96...".

The real answer to your question is stamped in the neck pocket. Post a picture for us if you look!

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

Well... This is what I found.

Nothing too revealing here:

Can I assume that the "H" stands for Haruka? What about the (N) red stamp?

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

The '98ish quilt tops were called "s540qs" (not qm). What intrigues me is the oddball serial number.

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

Well I think you found your answer there, it's an HS540QM. Most likely either a show special or just a spot production model. Almost certainly a '96. J.Customs have similar serial numbers.

A bunch of the details are odd about this guitar, most notably the direct-mount pickups. I've never seen another 6-string S like that except the 6-string half of an STW, which is another show special. Another is the round inlays. They'd been using the oval markers for a few years at that point.

Whoever said that the IBZUSA pickups were discontinued after 1994 isn't quite right. They were still used on some Japan market guitars in 1995.

Show specials always have strange details that don't match up to anything "normal". My STW has a typical F99 serial on the 6-string headstock but the 7-string headstock is totally blank. It also has two stamped Made in Japan neck plates with two different serials on them, neither of which match the headstock serial.

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

Ahhh, thanks for that.

Would I be safe to assume that (despite it not being a J-Custom), it was probably made in the J-Custom factory?

Also, I found this:

http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/foru...html#msg162804

The guy's model number is 603315, just 7 guitars away from mine. I'll PM him.

Re: Information About Rare S540QM

I apologize, I think that this is more correctly an HS540QM. H would stand for Ikebe, who often will special order small runs of guitars. That's probably what this is.

J.Customs are built in the same factory as the Prestige. Just more select woods, greater attention to detail, most experienced luthiers, etc. I wouldn't read too much into the serial number of the guitar.
