Inside the Wizard

OK, so most of us are pretty familiar with the "Skunk stripe" Wizard necks from 1999-2002. Today I finally got around to removing the ho-hum fretboard so I can install my new one. What I found inside surprised me, and maybe it will surprise you too.......... there's a Bubinga strengthening block INSIDE these things!!!! I can only assume it's in here to help resist neck twist because it's size, shape, and position would do very little to prevent warpage (back/fore bow). It's also definitely not cosmetic because it's completely hidden inside the neck. It appears to be one piece but I can't know that for sure without removing the truss rod..........Any thoughts???

Re: Inside the Wizard

Cool pictures! I'm afraid I can't answer the questions of why it's designed and built that way, but I appreciate the look inside the neck.

Peace

Mike

Re: Inside the Wizard

That is awesome haha, maybe that is why they're so strong and last for years?

Re: Inside the Wizard

It looks like they made a bubinga "bridge"to strengthen the joint between neck and headstock or (and) to hold the stussrod in place due to bad routing.

Thanks for the pics!

Either one is possible, but Ibanez has never been known for weak scarf joints before these were made........ I really don't know the true reason it's there.

Re: Inside the Wizard

Maybe Rich will chime in and give you his opinion. If I were you, I'd order some carbon fiber neck rods from stew-mac and drop those suckers in there before you glue the new fretboard on.

Re: Inside the Wizard

That's pretty awesome. I wonder if that's the norm on those necks, or if it was a test thing, or a one-off for what they thought might have been a weaker piece of maple?
