installing pickguard

Has anyone installed a pickguard on a RG570 or any other Ibanez that didn't come with one?
How's that basswood drill?

It should be pretty self explanitory. Throw the pickguard on, drill some pilot holes, then screw it in. I don't see any obstacles.

I like your username. Just keep that thing away from my guitars.

Be sure to give a good start for the holes by tapping with something pointed, and like Doink said, drill a SMALL pilot hole, then go a little larger.

If you just stick the drill on there and go for it all-in-one, you'll chip the paint all around the holes. *(Which you might not be able to see, since yer puttin' a pickguard on, but could result in BIGGER chips down the road...)

Good advice above. Here's a recap:
  • ensure pickguard fits without touching the tremolo, etc.
  • tape the guard in place (electrical tape is hassle free)
  • using a fine punch, tap a starter "intention" where each pickguard screw hole is
  • remove the pickguard and drill a small pilot hole (sorry i dont have a measurement, but make sure it's thinner than the pickguard screws.

pretty easy... glen

Shouldn't the pilot hole's be a little bit smaller than the main shaft (don't say it, Rich). This will leave plenty of wood for the thread to grab, but won't end up chipping the paint or cracking the wood.

The hole is somewhat flexable... but there is still a risk if the shaft is larger. *So be careful... go slowly.

We are talking about pickguards right? *
