I've bought my first Ibanez -- J-custom RG8470A!!

I just want to thank the board for the kind help and advices!

Here is my baby:
cgi.****.com/2005-Ibanez-J-Custom-RG8470A-VERY-RARE-1-26-AAAAA-311_W0QQitemZ170271493294QQihZ007QQcategoryZ33043Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The action is a little bit high compared to my PRS Modern Eagle (which was set up waaaay too low and needs a fix), but the JC is a good and solid guitar.
I have briefly set it up and put Elixir 9's on it and it sounded better.
I played it back-to-back with my PRS and my friend's 2008 JC 8420 (with SD pickups). I don't really like DiMarzios and they don't do clean very well (IMHO), but overall it's a versatile guitar.

The sustain is shorter, which might be attributed to the bolt-on neck, but one can always add vibratos to notes to make them ring longer.

The neck is wonderful and very fast, although it does not have the velvet-touch technology (I think it's just another marketing tool, but whatever).

I have not owned ANY 24-fret models before, so this guitar is definitely a keeper! Now I can play some of Vai's stuff and Paul Gilbert's stuff!

Differences between this model and the 2008 JC: The 2008 has a very beautiful binding, which is a plus. The 2008 also has a thicker "stem" on the fretboard inlays.
I was going to buy a 2008 JC, but I don't really like black/red, so I opted for this 2006 8470A.

To be honest with you, I don't think the top is that great, but it's acceptable. I just want a shredder because the PRS has a wide/fat neck.

In conclusion, I bought this guitar for one purpose only and it does it well. It'll be nice if it can achieve more, but there are other tools more suited for the job. I will not use this Ibanez to play vintage stuff or blues, etc. As long as it can do its job (shredding and contemporary rock) well, I'm happy. =)

I just thought I would share this news with the board, since the board has really helped me a lot during my search for my first Ibanez.

The RG8270 doesn't have flame maple binding either and has the 'wooden' stem to the vine. In fact the RG8470A is really an RG8270 with higher grade top and matching headstock. The 8470F has the velvet touch neck (which is the best finish ever) different neck profile, different 'pearl' stem to the vine and flame maple binding. I have both : An RG8270 VV and RG8470F FE and they really are awesome guitars. The sustain issue is probably due to the high action/low pup height.

Congratulations - I looked at that one over for a long time but came to the realization that if I bought another one, I might have to invest in a coffin too

And here's mine also:

it is actually a little darker in the original:

Re: I've bought my first Ibanez -- J-custom RG8470A!!

Wow, thank you guys for the warm welcome! It's very nice to see you guys posting pictures of your beloved RG8470A!

I am surprised that I didn't get flamed either! I've visited several Ibanez forums and people don't usually like PRS guitars. I was debating between getting a PRS Custom 24 and an Ibanez and people on PRS forums actually encouraged me to get an Ibanez if I want a shredder!

My dream has always been having an Ibanez JEM, either 7vwh or the floral one. However, a close friend of mine has recently sold his JEM (which I have played) and moved on to a J-Custom. He said something very inspiring to me, "You already have a PRS Modern Eagle, so although the Custom 24 is good, you'll always view it as a lesser PRS. Why don't you switch things up a little and get the top-of-the-line guitar from another manufacturer?"

So here I am, with my J-custom, although I'm still GASing for a white JEM or a blue JEM, but having compared the JEM and the J-Custom, I find the J-Custom more to my liking.

Some questions for you guys:
1) Do you guys usually mod your J-Custom? If yes, what are some usual mods? To be honest with you, I don't like the stock pickups that much and might be dropping some SD pickups in my J-custom. Yay or nay? =)

2) How do you guys remember all the model names? I mean...there's 8470F, 8470A, 8270, etc...Don't you guys get confused? I guess Japanese people are very systematic and would name the guitars according to the options they have, as opposed to Fender Strat 19XX reissue model, type c neck, xxx kind of pickup, xxx type of finish, etc.

3) Last question, please. This is for ALL RG8470A owners. Do your guitars come in Prestige case or JC case? I know they're essentially the same case, but I just want to know. According to the seller (who is very reputable and has a wonderful service!! Highly recommended!), Ibanez still used Prestige cases for J-customs in 2006.

Re: I've bought my first Ibanez -- J-custom RG8470A!!

I generally modify my guitars . . . but except for adding 2 ESP arming adjusters, I thought it would be nice to keep it as close to original since My wife bought it for our 10th anniversary. I wouldn't worry about modifying it. (Note: Jimbo72 has modified some of his and they look awesome!)

Re: I've bought my first Ibanez -- J-custom RG8470A!!

I do like to modify them!! Mostly just a pickup change and occasional hardware color change. Guess I get bored with the usual TZ/AN combo and the cosmo black hardware.
Here's my heavily modded JCRG 8620S with an 8570 maple neck, Bare Knuckle pickups and gold hardware.

That would be an excellent first J-Custom to buy!

Nicely done!

Re: I've bought my first Ibanez -- J-custom RG8470A!!

1. I like to keep my guitars std where possible. The only 'mods' I've done to my JC's is to lower the middle pup, lower the action and raise the pups slightly. I don't think SD's will fit in the body routing, the new models with SD's as std are different.
2. It's called 'train spotter' or 'anorak' syndrome !!! lol !!
3. My 2003 RG8570 came in the old style Prestige case. My 2005 RG8270 came in a Team J Craft Prestige stamped case, my 2006 RG8470F came in a Team J Craft J Custom stamped case. I think they use Prestige cases if they run out of the others though !
