I've got to buy an Ibanez
Every couple of years I get gas for an Ibanez. I don't buy many guitars but when I do I treat them as a long term prospect. I have kept all but two of the guitars I've ever owned (an epi les paul and a washburn acoustic - that eventually got replaced with similar guitars - doh!)
I have a nice CS strat, a Les Paul standard, an old jap squire (my first guitar, but modified), a Peerless archtop and a Yamaha acoustic.
I've never done the locking trem thing, despite getting into guitar because of EVH et al, and keep going through the "I should buy one" thing.
Every guitar I own I played before I bought - even driving to the other end of the country to try one out, I don't like the idea of buying one without playing it. The tales of poor sustain on S5470's only compounds my worries.
Last Saturday my wife persuades me into a music shop just for a look. Just before we get out of the shop she spies a SV5470 and says "now that is nice!" - usually she has absolutely no opinion. I was tempted to give it a try out, but resisted. Since then the Ibby gas is back. (she's actually said if she gets the job she's applied for she would buy it for me!)
Now for the point of this rambling life story. Having read, reread and researched all over the internet. I don't know what to do. I want the humbucker sound, and I want to go the locking trem route.
I really like the look of the S5470, fantastic shape and look, 2 8ve neck, zr trem - but that sustain issue!
So maybe an RG is the way to go. My thoughts are that the ZR is a better design (using roller bearings rather than a knife edge) but the RG looks more "metal" especially as colour choices are akin to an early ford catalogue.
Should I buy a cheap RG or S guitar to try it out or is that false economy? I know some of the cheaper guitars just feel horrible, I've played a few many years ago. I know that makes me sound like a guitar snob, I've just been spoiled by some really nice guitars.
Of course if there was a guitar shop that actually had more than one higher end Ibanez for me to try I'd go and play a few. I even went to the London music shops whilst visiting relatives and was massively disappointed by the lack of guitars to try.
I know there are some real knowledgeable guys on here and I really would appreciate your input.
I play all sorts of styles, but my current projects are a rock/jazz/blues/fusion band and I play with a singer, jazz stylee!
So what do you guys think?
