Question Is it J-Custom (with a dash) or J.Custom (with a dot)?

Hello there,

all over the place I see both variants, but I always wonder which way of writing is correct:

J-Custom with a dash

or

J.Custom with a dot - this is what the headstocks actually say.

What's your opinion?

Re: Is it J-Custom (with a dash) or J.Custom (with a dot)?

I suppose the grammatically correct way would be J. Custom, since J. is an abbreviation of Japan (or Japanese). The dot is an abbreviation mark.

Why does it matter?

Well, it matters because everywhere I look, people refer to these guitars as J-Custom models (written with a dash) and I wonder why.

Probably if you type it as J. Custom, it looks like the name of a person. Whereas J-Custom stands out differently and doesn't look like someones name. That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

I spell it as it is on the headstock. J. Custom.

Oddly enough, I have also wondered about this in the past.

It's a Japanese conspiracy.
While we are trying to figure this mystery out they are plotting.....

If the full stop is there to show an abbreviation then it should be "J' Custom" and nobody does that, I agree that J. Custom looks like Mr. Customs first name begins with J so I write it J-Custom.

Sorry to be a pr*ck, but an apostrophe can only be used in that way to represent missing letters in shortened or conjoined words like "wasn't" or "'cause". It is still pronounced in the same way the full word would be pronounced, without the missing letters. In that sense "J' Custom" would be pronounced "Juh custom" since it is a shortening of Japan.

Well I guess I wasn't so wrong all these years sticking to "J-Custom". And I think I'll keep it this way despite of the headstocks saying "J.Custom".

If you shelled out all the money for it, you can call it 'Bob' if you want.
