J Custom JCS21 on **** with a clear coated top??

I just noticed this on the bay and the pictures sure show that the top has been clear coated?
I own one of these and the top is Japanese paper, that's it, no clear, any pics of others I have seen also have no clear coat.
Anyone know anything about this? Its more of just a curiosity thing I don't plan on buying another one.

Re: J Custom JCS21 on **** with a clear coated top??

So yours has no coating of the weird paper finish on top? I remember seeing these quite some years ago, but never paid attention to that, as I thought/assumed they were clear-coated. Had you not mentioned it, that'd still have been my assumption.

I also noticed this on the Bay the other day, and in addition to the price being quite steep even for this kind of guitar, I was very curious about that conspicuous spot on the lower front area, right below the cable jack, where the finish looks just... plain oddly finished, not what I'd expect to see on such a JC. That, and your comment above, leads me to wonder- if these originally were not clear-coated, then I bet you this was blemished, attempted to half-ass fix (looks like the spot/paper there was sanded down), and ultimately decided to clear-coat it, to try make it look stock to the regular eye. The seller seems to carry quite some other musical items, so may be a store who bought it cheap, "fixed" it, and is trying to sell for a hefty profit.

BTW, the fretboard looks obviously played, so this is not a collector's item, and it definitely seems odd that there are absolutely no blemishes- little dings or scratches, anywhere.

The top is leather, these are not clear coated. Any "rarity" value that one had is long gone.
