John Petrucci customed Ernie Ball, what is it??

I saw a picture of his son with the EB right here: http://www.johnpetrucci.com/images/reny_1.jpg
and I'm wondering what all of that extra stuff is, as well as the different neck pickup? Anyone have an idea? Mr. Paul Warren??

I thought the JP EBMMs locked at the tuners, so you don't need the lockers.

Yeah, he has the Strat-style locks at the head. Is that pickup and the extra knobs really just a sustainer? I've never seen him with that axe before. What I want to see is him whip out that baritone!!

Strat style trems will NEVER be as stable as a doulbe locking floyd because they dont lock at the bridge so the ball ends can roll around and also since they dont have a locking nut are subject to kink up and get caught at the nut. you definitely wouldnt be able to stay in tune if you pull up on the whammy bar much at all

Actually, the only "extra" controls (outside of the standard piezo setup) would be the (2) small buttons/switches that are near the tremolo. I'm guessing that the additionl controls are probably an on/off button for the Sustainiac and a frequency/mode selector. Otherwise, it has the same control layout as a standard EB/MM JPM w/ the piezo:

(top horn)- piezo/magnetic pickup selector
(bottom)- magnetic pickup selector, magnetic volume, magnetic tone, piezo volume.

And the trem on the EB/MM JPM is nothing like a standard Strat-type non-locking trem. I've abused the trem pretty wildly both in the studio and live, and have had ZERO tuning/intonation issues. As long as you stretch the strings out properly, it's every bit as stable as any locking trem I've had (past and present).

Then you never intonated it, it's impossible to intonate the low E and A string, the trem does not allow enough movement [away from the nut], the saddle stops short when it meets the tail

My EB/MM JPM reads as perfectly intonated on my Pederson VS-1 tuner.

LOL Nah...wouldn't want to dishonor the guitar by playing any Pantera on it. I've put it through it's paces and have certainly taken the trem to the extremes, all with great results. It can't be expected to have the same range as a deeply back-routed Floyd, since it's NOT a deeply-backrouted Floyd. Gotta compare apples to apples. In comparing the EB/MM trem to any comparable Fender or other non-locking trem, it's head and shoulders above the rest in terms of stability. It does what it's designed to do, and it does it quite well

Why not petrucci and satch are pantera fans basicallY im not saying its a bad guitar, I would just rahter pick up and old Jpm ibanez cause it would have a ''real'' trem on it. The EB/MM's look better and they are more john petrucci I just cant live without a locking trem these days.

Different tremolos for different styles of music, and with different strengths/weaknesses. You can't expect to pull up 5 steps with the EB/MM JPM trem, because it's not designed to do that. Again...you've got to compare apples to apples, which isn't being done if you're comparing the range on an Edge to the range on the EB/MM. However, in regards to your statement of "Strat style trems will NEVER be as stable as a doulbe locking floyd because they dont lock at the bridge"....that's simply not 100% true. I've currently got 15 Edge/LoPro Edge equipped guitars, several of which get used live on a very regular basis. I've had no more stability issues with them than I have with the EB/MM JPM trem, and I play the hell out of them all. Although I'm sure that a poorly setup JPM trem would not play nearly as well as a properly setup LoPro Edge. Of course, as with any guitar or hardware-related issue, it's all a matter of opinion. It just helps to actually have hands-on experience with both items when making a blanket statement as to their respective qualities.
